Nope, no Vietnam JR MiG killers. They were very early in the war, returning in December '65, I believe, which is right before the air threat truly emerged. They did ground attack.

Would love to find a kill marking I've got a newspaper article about; apparently one of them was called in to help with a sniper that was pinning down a unit, perched in a really tall, solitary tree. Well, the JR F-4 was out of ordnance, but still obliged to help. They went into a very shallow dive, and with the wing clipped off the top of the tree, sniper included!! The kill marking applied was a tree with wings sticking out of it.

Hi All,

I am finalizing the F-4J VF-84 late 1971 versions.

Decals will be includes Cartograf printed National insignia red warnig intake triangles and Yellow chevrons.

Others are printed via Dry transfers. and will be reelased 1/32nd, 1/48th and 1/72nd scales.

With A2 size full poster instruction will be included.

Now I am searching pilotsnames or other modex information.

If you provide these information or other Modexes references, I will send one set after printing to him/her.

Of course I would credit his/her name on the instruction manuals.

If no one provides any information, I would release without Pilot names.

The dead line is 14th Feb. because I would release by 1st March.

Good Luck!

From Kim

Real nice job ! I like your profiles !

I would have liked to be able to help you, but alas, I don't have high definition photos of these birds.

Even with my > 100 000 US NAVY photo collection.

Man, that's to cool I would really like to see that one!

Hi

I was in VF84 from 1970 to 1972. If I would have found this sight sooner I might have been able to help you out.

Now I am searching pilotsnames or other modex information.

This version shows:

White Radome.

Six stars on vertical fins.

No white Bu. No. on the vertical fin.

Black pilot names on the yellow back.

I am drawing based on the one photo from Page 26 Squadron Publications C&M series vol.17 U.S> Navy F-4 Phantoms and and two photos from VF-84 part of US Navy F-4 Phantoms Pt.1 from Aero Research Co. CD-rom version.

Here is the profiles of 200 155868

al32003-200-left_v.jpg

and 201 157298

al32003-201-left_v.jpg

and one of Hasegawa kit shows 206 155868.

I think Mod 200 155868 changed to 206 after some times.

If you provide these information or other Modexes references, I will send one set after printing to him/her.

Of course I would credit his/her name on the instruction manuals.

If no one provides any information, I would release without Pilot names.

The dead line is 14th Feb. because I would release by 1st March. :tease:

Good Luck!

Reckless, although you weren't in on the research end, a lot of folks have been asking questions about VF-84's missions/actions during that period of time. Who better to fill us in than you. Perhaps post some historical stuff in one of the other threads. Being a Jolly Roger's fan, I'd sure like to hear a few war stories from Ernie's locker!

I too was in VF-84 from 1971 to 1973 and made the extended cruise. I have a few stories.

I bought this set some months ago and must say I found it very difficult to use.

The poster is super as is the alignment of the decals. But many of the dry-transfer would simply not release from the backing paper (especially the coloured ones). I tried to apply them to the matt gray paint: no deal; sprayed 2 coats of Future: no deal; 2 coats of MM flatcoat: no deal (I rubbed through this coat when I tried again). I tried warming the sheets just prior to application (a tip received on this board) and again, to no avail

I ended up applying the dry-transfers to some clear decal sheet and (after a lot of cutting) adding those to the model. Since I had flatcoated the model, this required brushing (!) on several coats of future. Only to end up with some silvering :-( (mind, there were now 9 coats of paint on the model already)

The walkways are particularly bad - these are standard waterslides and simply shriveled to snot when I removed them from my water container thingy. Oh, and I found out they need to be cut closely, the whole sheet is one decal film... naturally this was clear after I wet them, grrr...

On a plus note, the remaining water-slides were some the best I EVER applied!! They went on beautiful and needed just a little bit of setting solution! This sheet was not one film btw. - the carrier film is impressively tight!

Maybe it was because of my first try with dry-transfers, but I sure as heck will not try them again...
