“Black 2†Stab/JG-52

In the final weeks of the war on the Eastern Front, a number of German pilots resurrected the practice of marking their aircraft with bright and colorful markings. One of the popular themes seems to be the “tulip nose†originally used by Graff and Hartmann. The tulip markings appear in black or red and have been photographed on at least five aircraft.

Perhaps the markings were the last act of defiance as the end of the war neared. For what ever reason, they do provide for interesting and colorful subjects.

The model is Hasegawa’s 1/48th G-14. The kit cockpit was replaced with an MDC resin cockpit. Paint is a combination of Gunze and some very old Floquil Military Colors applied with an Iwata airbrush. Weathering was done with oil paints, artist ink and pastel chalk. The tulip decals are from the Hasegawa “Tulip Nose†K-4 kit and the rest of the decals were taken from various 109 and 190 sheets.

The photos were taken with a Nikon Coolpix 4500.

Thanks for taking the time to look.

Dave

You did very well, I like your model.

It does seem out of place that in the chaos surrounding the final retreats on the Eastern Front, these 'retro' markings would be applied. But for whatever reason, they definitely do add color.

Guys, thanks for the kind comments.

And a thank you to the mods who took the time to put on this and the other group builds. The group builds have given me a nice outlet and inspiration to return to model building, especially since I do not have a model club close enough to get to on a regular basis any more.

Thanks everyone,

Dave
