Douglas A2D-1 Skyshark (1:48)

I've got a meager start to this very nice kit. I've also been scratch building a few components that I didn't like. The cockpit being one of them. Here is my Start to the Cockpit...

The reference I'm using is the Ginter book on the A2D-1. Has lots of good shots of the Cockpit and others as well...

Good Luck with your effort, looks like you have a great start. I've yet to get all the parts cut out as I'm kinda stuck on what to do with the Engine intakes and exhaust...

"The instructions recommend putting strengthening strips along the wings to act as spars, so I've used some of the scrap backing material, cut in 90mm lengths, 2-abreast along the wings, being careful to avoid blocking the wheel well and flap area, just in case I do decide to articulate the flying surfaces."

Is this what you are talking about?

This really stiffened up the wings considerably, but I'm going to use Tamiya's Light curing putty as one fine gentleman from Japan told me about to fill the void and add somemore strength and to add the structure behind the flap well.

Check his website for tips for building aircraft. He as of yet hasn't built this kit, but what he does with every model he tackles is amazing. Jun if you are watching, your models are fantastic. The website http://www.geocities.jp/yoyuso/index.html

So what Bang seat you talkin about? The kit seat leads a little to be desired and wouldn't mind getting a replacement so I don't have to make one from Scratch...

Get on with the kit. From what I can gather you only started it Saturday evening. Unless you hid it from me. My Dynavector gannet is storming along. 4 years and counting. And I still haven't got the wings removed from the backing sheet. And I managed to over sand the fuselage halves. Get on with the kit you say. Baah.

Apart from that, it looks like your doing a bang up job. Again. Reminds me of a Wyvern thats had a front end shunt though. :)

I've always wanted to add this aircraft to my USN flightline, but the vac-u-form kits scare me...I've never built one. You are making this one look easy! Great job. I will be following this thread closely.

Maybe someday in a moment of insanity, I'll try to build a vac kit.

Wow, good work so far Mike. Keep up the posting of lots of photos and hints. I have this kit in the stash but haven't touched it since I've never done a vacu-form kit before. I'll have to use you as a guide when your done. I look forward to seeing this done. I really like the look of the Skyshark. I saw one at Nationals in Phoenix and it hooked me. Ordered mine from Hannants that next week.

Is the kit seat any where near normal? Someone might have a spare and then all you would need were the restraints? Another option maybe?

Seeing this vacuform kit almost makes me want to break out my 1/48 P6M Seamaster and get cracking...then I realize I still haven't finished the Foxbat :worship: . Looking awesome though, keep it up.

The sanding is really easy, and took me less than an hour for ALL of the parts. As long as you have the big black line drawn round the parts, you have a perfect guide as to how far to sand down.

I use a very rough sanding stick that I bought from a Nail boutique in bulk. It really blasts through the excess material, and I just work my way round the parts, trimming them down to the black line. After that, I test-mated the flying surfaces, and scraped the edges with a sharp blade to improve fit. It's a messy old job, but soon done.

When you do decide to take the plunge on the vacs, choose a Dynavector kit, and you won't be disappointed. They're very well engineered, and great fun to build. Just resist the urge to sand the large parts on a flat surface, as unless you're VERY careful or lucky, you'll end up with damaged parts. The weight of your fingers on the part causes them to bow out, and consequently you get more material removed from the area around the pressure point. That's how so many people end up with banana-shaped fuselages, and wings that have no aerofoil shape... Fortunately, I found that out pretty early & took to the sanding stick method.

Hope that helps & gives you the impetus to jump into the vac building world :lol:

I have a vacc conversion to take a Cougar to a twin seat trainer version. Might be a bit of a start. But I would like a Dynavector kit. Just need to lay aside the money for one or find one real cheap! :)

Very nice work there Mike. Had me searching through evil bay and King Kits looking for a Dynavector kit. Did you manage to have alook at those sites I sent you?

So how is this build going? I never looked much at the Skyshark until I started reading "The Lonely Sky" by Douglas test pilot Bill Bridgeman. In the book there is a picture of a natrual metal A2D. Very pretty. So, now I've ordered the Ginter book and currently looking for this Dynavector kit.

BTW- Parche- where did you get a 1/48th P6M?

EDIT: Holy Cow! I found one at Hannants! Ordered!
