gambit3131
I wasn't going to post any photos of this. However, I got to a point tonight I wanted to share. The SR-71 is my favorite aircraft of all time. This is a model my ex-wife bought for me back around 1999 when I was going through my first round of modeling start-up. When she bought it for me I had delusions of grandure of making it an incredible build. Of course, my skill level was way below what I wanted it to be. So, of course it sat in the closet for several years. I think it's that 'I know I can't produce a model like those in FSM so I just won't do it' mentality that kept me away for so long. Anyway... I was looking through my small stash at what I could build quick. I figured since this was from the ex I could throw it together and be done with it. Well, as I was building her, I found I had many gaps to fill. That is taking more time since I am still new to that technique. Below are two pics of my current progress. I plan on detailing similar to how Zactoman did his in this thread. SR-71 Weathering Edited March 29, 2007 by gambit3131

Incaroad
This is a model my ex-wife bought for me back around 1999 Funny how X wives have a tendancy to screw up what was once near and dear to ya... I'm glad you are finally taking a stab at the SR-71. It ain't that bad... I built this in oh 1986 I think and then it took a turn for the worse when My X decided to let people handle it and break stuff off it until I got it back. My F-14A wasn't so lucky as she got that in the divorce... This shot is of the dust magnet. One day I think I might fix it... As it stands a reminder... My favorite... The F-14A Toncat... I loved this model. 1989 winner at the nats 1/48 Hasegawa F-14A that the X has... I wonder if it's still intact? Cheers, Larry.

I was born at Beale AFB where those flew from. Our family never had a wall clock while we lived there- the sonic booms kept knocking them off the walls! I was wondering, where did you get the pattern for all the red covers for that? I think I'm going to go to Wal-Mart and get the Monogram 1/72 kit and do the same thing. Actually it's gonna take me some time to show you where I came up with the patterns. I was fortunate enough to see the SR-71 at Edwards on static display in the 80's danged if I know the exact date but I took a bunch a 35mm shots of this sucker and it had all the little covers on everything and I thought it looked pretty cool. I'll have to take a long look for the negatives, load them up and scan them if you'd like the shot's I would give m to ya if-n ya want em! Drop me a line so I can email them to ya when I can scan them when I find the negatives. I wish I had slides but I wasn't doin slides then. But the shots came out pretty good anyways. I pushed the film pretty good and they came out with exceptional detail. Black aircraft are hard to take pictures of! I just scanned this picture. It doesn't really do it justice just an example of what I got a few years ago... We can thank the "X" for how it looks now! Someday I will rebuild it back to an exceptable look. Thanks for the comments! Cheers, Larry.

Uncle Uncool
How difficult is build up this kit? I just buyed one of this. It's not difficult at all; my aunt Ursula gave me the Italeri kit back in 1992 as a birthday gift, me thinks. I was just 8 years old and was indeed impressed by the kit's size. Hence, it sat in my closet - unbuilt - until I nearly became 15! Some months after I was 15 I went by this hobby store which had this kit on display in the showcase, and I was instantly disappointed... By takin' a good look at the assembled model, I realised the nose looked all wrong; the nose shape was totally incorrect forward from where the windshield ends: Watchin' at gambit3131's picture, I thought someone had tackled with that awful nose and attempted to correct it. Thing is it's almost impossible to get the correct plans in order to try and devise a way to correct it. And there has been no aftermarket correction kit either... Also, the fuselage line in the area where the main landing gear is located is totally wrong as well, and it's very evident while lookin' at the model from the side. Consequently; after 18 years since I got it, my kit is still sittin' in my stash, waitin' for some sort of miracle. It's such a nice model to build it out of the box, just as it is, with those awful flaws, me thinks. Sad, ain't it? But otherwise, it's a darn good kit. Unc²
