Let's try here!

Recommended Posts

I'm trying my first Alclad(sp?) finish.

So , I'm hopeing to practice on a model I started . Here's how far I've gotten.

I have alread sprayed Model Master NON buffing alum on this model...

My understanding is........... that it would be ok to spray the Alclad Clear Base over this. ????

I want to do this because to me, the Model Master finish is to grainey .

I then have planned to spray with Alclad " Aircraft Alum " to get that smoother/ shiney finish..

Some of the panels on the model HAD already been left a chrom green color.. ( the clear will go over that too.)

So, I'm expecting contrast from having those different colored panels when the Alclad Aircraft Alum is sprayed. I would then like to mask certin other panels and use different Model Master shades over the Alclad...

HELP??? Please tell me if there is a compatibility issue I'm getting into that I'm not aware of.

Thanks, Henry

I haven't used that product before, but I wouldn't expect the clear coat to give you a 100% smooth finish over the MM non buffing metalic, go ahead and try buffing it and see what happens, and/or use some steel wool to smooth everything out, also I've heard that the Alclad Clear is a waste of time and money.

Do some searching and I'm sure you'll find more about the clear coat.

Just remember that what ever the surface texture is, it'll be magnified 10 times after you applied the silver finish, (everything shows) I always use steel wool to prep the surface of the plastic before using any type of metalic finish.

Henry,

i have not used the Alclad clear base, but i am assuming that it is a Laquer paint, the same as the rest of their line. The only problem i can see that you may have is spraying a Laquer paint over the top of an Enamel paint. Is the MM paint you have used an Enamel or an Acrylic? (sorry i don't use MM paint so i'm not sure if the Non Buffing come in Acrylics as well).

When you do attempt this, if you havn't done already, i would just spray very light coats of the Alclad over the top of the old paint allowing about five to ten minutes in between each coat, to try and minimise the Alclad from damaging the paint underneath.

Not sure if this is the advice you were looking for, but i hope it helps.

Jeff.
