1/48 Monogram F-18A Legacy Hornet

Recommended Posts

Hey Man  I'm definitely going to do an aggressor this time, but not sure which Blue or Brown? I've been kinda leaning towards the brown scheme from VFC-13 with the Hi-Decal sheet. It's the one with the Iragi flags on the tail and the "01" bort no. on the nose. "Yes" it's a target! I'll see ya around dude.

So is that "target" going to be finished for the Nats ?

Probably see you at Ontario in June I guess. Later

Mark

Thanks again for the all the comments guys!

I hope to be more of an inspiration rather than discouragement to some of you. Keep in mind, I've been doing this sort of thing for a while now and I certainly didn't wake up one day with this skill.

Nice work Cyrus. Nat's entry for this year?
Thanks man. If I can get it done? I have other kits on the bench, but this is the one I've been focusing on lately.
Superbly accurate rescribe! Although a little deep. Looking forward seeing this come together. I remember seeing your F4 posted on here sometime ago, very nice model.
Thanks PapaSmurf...yes they do appear that way, but after layers of primer, paint, decals, and gloss coat they are just the right depth to hold a wash.

Cyrus- are you riveting with the no.80 drill bit? It looks very well done. I used to rivet with the pin/vise but never really like how they looked with a wash. Yours look like after they are primered/paintd/futured/etc, they will be at the perfect depth. Pardon the many questions, but how many twists of the drill bit did you use? I have yet to rescribe a kit but I'll add rivets and yours look like they were tooled with the kit. Super work!

Last question- what is your opinion of the Monogram F-18 kit? I've got a couple of BB pits but I don't want to spend a fortune on the Hase kits, the Monogram might be an alternative.

Again, sorry for the many questions. You most certainly are an inspiration. You've got me wanting to grab this kit and have a go at it!

Thanks!

Thanks Afterburner! No problem with the questions...just shoot! Now to answer your questions...

Before the rivet template came out, I spaced all the rivets by eye. Nowadays, I use the template to speed things up. I align the jagged edge along the panel lines an burnish the rivets with a needle in a pin vise. Then I drill each one out with no. 80 bit.

In 1/48, I have to say the Monogram kit is the best "bang for the buck" next to the Hasegawa kit. The overall shape is pretty accurate, but will require some work to bring up to current standards. Even with the new Hobby Boss kit in the horizon listed close to the price of a Hasegawa, you still can't go wrong for the price.

A serious question- How about casting some of those tails? Maybe Dave Roof could offer them (Oh I shouldn't even bring that up as I'm sure he's busy enough allready).
Pete. The thought has crossed my mind, but is there enough of a demand to make it worth while? I think most people would rather build a Hasegawa kit instead. Just my opinion.

Matt S...Thanks for posting the link. B) Btw, there's a couple more in the ARC gallery in case you missed them. My F-14D VF-2 and F-5E VFC-13.

Thanks for the answers Cyrus- now I just need to land a couple of the Monogram kits and I'll be ready to tackle the project.

One last question- are you using Mr. Surfacer for a primer? You have a nice fine grain look to the fuselage.

Thanks for the advice!!

As usual Cy... the best I've seen!! I'm proud of you, young man!! You do what I think are some of the best builds with these old kits and make them look far superior to their high-priced, high-tech cousins!!

Steven

G'day all. Here's a few progress shots of my new Hornet. I'm using the Black Box cockpit, Golden Dragon wheel set, Orion Models tail braces, Eduard PE, and CE flaps and slats. The kit is completely scribed. Hope you like it?

Hey there Cy! Would it be possible for U to take a pic of all your scribing/rivet tools/templates/Tools?? I'd sure like to give this a go...

Thanks In Advance

Dave

Of course I'm not Cyrus but take a look at this site for the rivet gauge's he's talking about

http://www.hlj.com/hljlist2/?Dis=-2&fr...rd=Rivet%20tool

Then go here to see a scribing template set

http://www.hlj.com/product/HSGTP-1

Then search around a bit more to find the rest. Currently the scibing templates are on back order.

While you're at it take a look at the etching saws they are an absolute must have for scribing as well.

Hope this helps

Cheers,

Larry.

Wow that sucks as those saws are worth the wait. Any friends where you live that could honor an address to use... Hell you could use mine and I'd send them to your APO.

When I ordered all that I have now (when the back orders were receiver in Japan) it only took a week to get to me... Pretty fast from there I would think.

Oh well, Just a thought.

Cheers,

Larry.

Ya know, I thought I had heard the heavenly trumpets sounding Cy's newest creation . Good work!!

Jim

Thanks Jimbo! Glad you like so far. I got other kits to show and tell if your interested? :beer4:

One last question- are you using Mr. Surfacer for a primer? You have a nice fine grain look to the fuselage.
No problem Afterbuner. Yes, I primed the kit with Mr Surfacer 1000. They now make 1200 in case you didn't know. Give it a shot and tell me what you think.

Thanks Steven! It was you who got me started when I saw your scribed builds...remember? :)

Dave...Larry already answered your question. You definitely need razor saws too (I forgot to metion that on my previous post). Btw, Gordon at Sprue Brothers carries some of these items an he probably ships where you are too. Take a look at his site.

Your work is an inspiration. I would love to see more examples of your work and was wondering if you has considered doing an article on your superb scribing techniques. I know I have a few Revell-Monogram kits that could benefit from a Cyrus Tan like treatment!
