Review: B-1B Cockpit Detail Set

Recommended Posts

Hi all!

Finally it arrived! Earlier this week I received the resin detail set from Goffy Model to replace the cockpit of Monogram's and Revell's B-1B kits.

I know there have been on ARC some discussions whether it is a needed set or not (if interested in all opinons click here). I won´t get into the discussion, but I´ll keep this to the mere facts.

The kit comes in a grey resin and is composed by 20 parts. The detail level is good as the pictures below will show, but a few points puzzle me. The very first one is the way the kit is packed, that in my opinion is the reason why some of the parts arrived damaged. Nothing to serious, but a bit annoying because easy to avoid. Everything comes in a transparent zip-plastic bag. In it the very large pieces of the tubs are mixed with the much smaller and delicate ones. During the shipment the larger pieces must have knocked off some parts from the smaller ones (see the picture of the bang seats, where two of the have the rails broken off, or the boarding ladder that had both hand rails broken and also the linkage at its top). Two separate bags would improve the shipment safety at a minimum cost, I think.

The second point is shown here under:

According to the kit there is no complete wall closing the end of the forward cockpit. From my interpretation of the pictures I have, in particular Daco's book on the B-1B, there should be a wall there, with an opening in the center.

The tunnel between fwd and aft cockpits is extremely detailed:

Sadly not much will be visible at the end....

Both front and rear panels are very nicely done and only requires some careful painting:

To complete the fwd cockpit Goffy Model provides the side panels and a panel to be glued to the inside of the canopy. All nicely detailed:

Part 2.

The rear cockpit is also very very nice. The door to the electronic compartment just behind the cockpit is closed, while the access hatch is opened:

The boarding ladder is also very nicely detailed, needing only to be cleaned from some molding imperfections in the most recessed areas. Note that the hand rails are completely knocked off and will require to be scratched, as well as the delicate linkage at the top of the ladder:

The seats are very nice, with belts already in place. Sadly two of them have been damaged during transport:

Small details as the rudder pedals, levers, control sticks, folding tables for the rear cockpit complete the kit:

As you can see I have already started separating the bigger pieces from the molds, but I haven´t checked yet how the fit is. I'll post more on that on my In-Progress thread here.

Oh, btw: in the instruction sheet they refer to a "Nose gear bay and bomb bay". Sounds interesting, doesn't it?

Shame they didn't include hatches to make opening the kit up easier. You wouldn't think it would add that much to the price of the set.

As for the front cockpit's rear bulkhead, from looking at the instructions (available at Modelimex: http://www.modelimex.cz/inshop/pictures/_O...GOFMO7271_L.jpg ), it would appear that the tunnel piece effectively forms that rear wall, so when you join the two pieces, you get the complete bulkhead. ??? I *think* it's accurate - there aren't any really good shots of the area in the Daco book, but it would appear that the stbd side doesn't have a flat bulkhead, instead following the shapes of the galley, where the port side does, beside the toilet.

Yes, you are correct. When assembled the central galley part forms the rear wall for the front cockpit. The fact is that this wall is full height on the toilet side (port), while it´s very low on the other side. I am not sure whether it´s correct or not.

If anyone has good pictures, please let me know!

For anyone wanting a U.S. source for the 1/72 Goffy B-1B cockpit resin set (#7271), John Vojtech has it in stock in Illinois at umm-usa.com.

He said he has a couple sets left, and after those are gone he'll be getting more around the end of July. I bought one today and it was under $50USD including postage from Illinois to Nashville.

It's not listed on his website, but if you email him directly or through the site with what you want and your address, he'll send you the price, etc.

He takes Money Orders, checks and PayPal!

email: john@umm-usa.com

or

HTH anybody that might want one! I was very happy to find a closer source!

With all due respect to Goffy and you, guys,at the end-what will you see of it?

I'm a little puzzled at Goffy's choice of concealed cockpits,as their 1/48 S-3 one.

Knowing "it's there" for $XXX is a bit expensive knowledge, isn't it?
