Delta Air Lines Hercules from 1969

Recommended Posts

thanks David - I vaguely remember reading about civilian Herks, but don't remember seeing too many images

If I remember correctly Delta only had three of them, and I think they're all represented in those airliners.net photos.

Everyone knows there's no money in freight!

Pig

Pig,

I don't know if you know about it, but a Delta management weenie was actually quoted as saying "there's no money in freight".

Wonder where we would be now without that "forward vision".......

I've flown with Captains who were qualifed on the DAL herc. They were also checked out on another aircraft.

United said the same just before they got rid of our DC-10 freighters.

Back in the late 1960s a Canadian company called Pacific Western Airlines bought several Hercs. A lot of their work was up in the Arctic, but several of them found work all over the globe. One crashed in Hawaii, another was shot down in Africa, and eventually only one was left.

That Herc has passed through several owners since, but its like having your own money printing press. Its flying so much the one plane could basically carry the rest of the company's operation.

There's still a few around running cargo. The most that I've heard of at one company would probably be Lynden Air Cargo, based up in Alaska. I THINK they operate six or so.

And here's a bunch of photos, including a couple of interior shots, of their L-100s. Some of these are as recent as this winter:

Did someone mention Hercs? :)

I had some Lynden pictures at one point but they seem to have vanished. Instead here's a National Center for Atmostpheric Research C-130 after having some work done. Check out the big snowflake on the tail.

Wow, all of the Delta pics are pretty cool. Well, you could paint a Herc purple with green polka dots and I'd still like the way it looks

Cheers,

Dave
