Hey guys,

WHat would be your favorite weapon config. of any helicopter? Mine is as follows:

MH-60K/L

M134-AIRCRAFT-M134

FFAR-AIRCRAFT-30MM

We all know a helo isn't actually supposed to fly, but...........

I'd have to say the coolest configuration is a USN H-3 loaded with a B-57 Nuclear Depth Charge. That's some big-*** balls......chucking a nuke out of a helicopter!

Here's a toast to my rotary-winged, ASW USN comrades. :yahoo:

My favourites:

1. AH-1G

XM-159, XM-18, M129, M134, XM-18, XM-159

The AH-1G that I'm about to finish has this loadout. :D

2. ACH-47

M24A 20mm & XM-159 on left stub wing, .50 calibre x 2 left cabin, M-5 Grenade Launcher (nose), 0.50 calibre x a in the aft ramp, .50 calibre x 2 right cabin, M24A 20mm & XM-159 on right stub wing

Wasn't a version of the Mil Mi-8 the heaviest armed chopper in history..? I believe it lugged about six rocket pods, four Swatter missiles and a machine gun in the nose.

Cheers,

Andre

You are right.

During Afghanistan War Russian Mi-8s where the heaviest armed gunships ever. They had up to six 32 rounds rocket pods + up to 4 additional 7.62 PKT MGs on side pylons + one more PKT in the nose AND ONE MORE PKT in the clamp shell cargo door for backfire.

On early stages of war it was also common to install outomatic grenade launcher in the side door of troop compartment. Later on it was removed and substituted by couple of gunners with AKMs.

In some cases rocket pods on side pylons were substituted by these BAD BOYS:

AH-1G

7-shot, XM-18, M134, M134, XM-35, 7-shot

I could get into my favorite Apache breakdown, but that gets complicated. Lets just say a lot of stuff that goes boom.

Jon

Jon,

I'm not that familiar with the Apache, is it cleared for any weapons beyond 2.75" rockets and Hellfires?

There's a photo of a display model of the WAH-64D made by McDonnell Douglas that features wingtip mounted Sidewinders in one of the early 1990s Jane's All the World's Aircraft books. For the longest time I had a photocopy of that page in a binder, but I think it was a casualty of one of my several moves in the late 90's early 00s.

Other weapons that were considered were the Air-to-Air Stinger missile (featured in the Nick Cage movie "Thunderbirds" IIRC), and the UK Starstreak missile (featured in one of the Italeri 1/48 AH-64D kits, don't remember if it was the old or new version. It has the launchers on the boxtop illustration at any rate).

As for my favorite loadouts, that's a pretty difficult question to answer, since I think they're all cool. Sixteen Hellfires (Apache/Zulu Cobra); full size anti-ship missiles (Super Frelon? w/exocet, the "Seapache" w/Harpoon), or nuke depth charges (various - even the SH-60 could use them in the early days) are all *really* cool, though. But nothing beats the "Shrödinger" loadout (Comanche - you won't know what it's loaded with until the doors open!).

Ok guys, I know this is definitely not a standard loadout, but I thought it might make some of you Apache guys happy. Jon, you know the story on this one? I assume it is a display setup or something to show multiple weapons at once. Still an interesting pic. This the one you mentioned, Sebastian?

No, but it looks pretty cool from here...

On this page (http://www.defencejournal.com/dec98/apache.htm) there's a pic (not the one I meant) of an Apache with wingtip Sidewinders. It's really small, though, so it's not all that useful.

The photo I'm thinking of was of a scale model, fairly large (thinking at least 1/32 scale possibly bigger), and only showed the forward half of the helicopter. It was painted in what I assume was a gray/green wraparound scheme like the one that used to be on the Harriers (since the photo was b&w I can't say for sure), and it had sidewinder/rockets/hellfires on both sides.

A bunch of sites state that the Apache has been test flown with the Stinger, Sidewinder and Mistral, but details or pics are mighty scarce. Stinger-armed Apaches seem to be most common in flight sims...

Cheers,

SP
