According to several sources, including Wikipedia, the F-7 was the designation given to the YF2Y-1 Sea Dart. Others seem to contradict this, saying the F7U Cutlass was redesignated F-7. Which one's right? Are they both? So far, I've figured out these aircraft: F-1 - FJ-2/3/4 Fury F-2 - F2H Banshee F-3 - F3H Demon F-4 - F4H Phantom F-5 - Freedom Fighter F-6 - F4D Skyray F-7 - ? F-8 - Crusader F-9 - F9F Panther F-10 - F3D Skyknight F-11 - F11F Tiger F-12 - Blackbird F-13 - Never Assigned F-14 - Tomcat F-15 - Eagle F-16 - Falcon/Viper F-17 - Cobra F-18 - Hornet F-19 - Never Assigned (presumably) F-20 - Tigershark F-21 - Lion (Kfir) F-22 - Raptor F-23 - Black Widow F-24/F-26 - Never Assigned F-27 - Lancer (?) Also, as far as I know, there are no designations assigned above F-23 other than the F-35 abomination to the system. Most definitely, the Boeing X-32 never got an "F" designation, 32 or otherwise. A6BSTARM Posted August 16, 2007 Share Posted August 16, 2007 The F7U Cutlass was out of service completely by the time the DoD re-did designation systems in 1962. The YF2Y-1 Sea Dart was still in flying prototype stage and it was still believed that it along with the P6M (later P-6) Seamaster would be part of the national defense system.
