pollie
There's a very simple explanation, guys: they are trying to sell them to the Blue Angels. A contract is about to be signed and Iran's top man will soon be in the US to seal the deal. They have to free up those Hornets for the operational squadrons you know. What a strange world we live in
janman
id say the scheme is a direct rip from the blue angles, more as a political *finger*, rather than lack of originality. don't get offended, its what their counting on :D Gotta agree with Ray.
wakko807
What's up with the different air intakes? They ran out of yellow paint? :D
Su-34
Actually, IMO that scheme fits quite nice!
Raymond
my god! I'm agreeing with Trigger, whats happening! :D i too would of liked to see an original display camo, though a combat camo scheme would of been cool!
hari ari
In a recent issue of Flight International, there are pictures of Iranian reverse engineered and modified (mid fuselage mounted wing) F-5 look alike. Capability of the aircraft is unknown. Thanks
janman
my god! I'm agreeing with Trigger, whats happening! The next thing you know you mention the T-word on a Flanker thread.
blackhawk7
Maybe since the Yanks are painting their jets in Iranian colours, the Iranians have decided to paint theirs in the Yanks colours
toadwbg
The real question I want answered about the paint job is if those Chinese left lead in the paint again! Edited September 23, 2007 by toadwbg
Trigger
Maybe since the Yanks are painting their jets in Iranian colours, the Iranians have decided to paint theirs in the Yanks colours :D If they were intended as aggressors, fine. I would expect them to be painted in shades of gray to match an F-16 or F/A-18 in that case. But why would you paint them as the Blue Angels?
Raymond
The next thing you know you mention the T-word on a Flanker thread. :D if that day comes, feel free to repatriate me with an Iron bar! :D With Iran buying Y-8s to replace is deteriorating Hercs, I'm surprised they haven't got on board with the JF-17 Program, certianly would give them a far greater cost effective platform, and they already use the 29s engine in it! :D
PNW_Modeler
oh wait....better yet....who gives a crap? strange looking F-5 with Hornet-esque tails? Yeah....kinda odd. paint job strikingly similar to the Blue Angles? OK...kinda weird. I am sure if they really wanted to ruffle some feathers, they would have taken some of those Tomcats they have and painted them like USAF Thunderbirds.
Trigger
I am sure if they really wanted to ruffle some feathers, they would have taken some of those Tomcats they have and painted them like USAF Thunderbirds. And incur the wraith of the ARC Tomcat Mafia?

roym
As said above, the really important thing is who is going to do the conversion set and will it be in 1/72? I want to thank the IRIAF because they have made it easier for us modellers to make accurate models of their planes by matching their new aircraft paint schemes to all available model paint ranges, i.e Humbrol, Model Master and Xtracolour, all of which carry Blue Angels blue and insignia yellow. That is what is really going on here you know!
OKB Krasnaya Zvezda
I like the show of the reds, these guys know for shure how to fly. (looking for cover now)
roym
I don't think it's an attempt at an aerobatic team. It's a couple of prototypes/pre-productions. And they picked that colour cos they know the bestest team in the world ever was the Silver Swallows, and they can only dream of ever being able to fly like them...... Julien (UK)
That blue yellow certainly looks interesting and no one can deny its not Blue Angles like. I for one would be interested in learning more about the scheme before speculating too much. I would doubt that many people in Iran would be aware of the Blue Angles and maybe that's why they thought they could "borrow" the scheme. On the subject of tight formation flying I have seen over many airshows some spectatular flying by teams from all parts of the world. On different days, and at different shows teams have given good and bad performances. Even though I am British and love the Red Arrows I have seen the Italians and the French give great performances. Still to this day one of the best airshow performances I have seen was the Irish Air Corps Silver Swallows in their Magister Aircraft. Julien
pollie
I think the jet in the rear is a remodeled F-5 while the one closest to the camera is new build. Check the aft fuselage, the intakes and the nose. The pitotboom is actually mounted beneath the nose! OFF TOPIC: As for demoteams: best ever were the Royal Netherlands Air Force Grasshoppers and their four Alouette III helicopters
PBoilermaker
In a desperate attempt to get this thread back on topic:I think the jet in the rear is a remodeled F-5 while the one closest to the camera is new build. Makes sense. Also note how the rear aircraft has what appear to be externally supported tail fins (read: add-ons after the fact) while the nearer aircraft appears to have internalized tailfin support.
