Moffettflyer
There were new photos of VAQ-132!!!! Wow! not even tail codes on the Scops' CAG. They repainted over their tail markings prior to deployment. Obviously Expeditionay VAQ squadrons are going to have toned down CAG markings from this point forward. VAQ-135 and 138 also have lost their colorful CAG's. Seems alot like what happened to the P-3 Orion's in the mid 80's. Here is that same aircraft at Whidbey in May: Edited July 15, 2012 by Moffettflyer

Moffettflyer
What will happen to the squadrons in 14 when it is deactivated I assume they would be split among other wings. Greenert reverses move to deactivate CVW-14 By Joshua Stewart - Staff Writer Posted : Wednesday Mar 28, 2012 13:25:36 EDT Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Jon Greenert has decided to reverse the looming deactivation of one of the Navy’s 10 carrier air wings, citing “congressional sensitivity†about reducing the service’s force structure. In a March 20 memo, Greenert said Naval Air Station Lemoore, Calif.-based Carrier Air Wing 14 will not be deactivated as previously planned. CVW-14 is attached to the aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan, which is currently dry-docked at Naval Base Kitsap, Wash., for scheduled maintenance. A CVW includes around 2,000 sailors; Greenert’s decision creates more job security for those positions. “Effective immediately, deactivation of CVW-14 is disapproved. Restore CVW-14 to an operational status,†the CNO’s memo said. Greenert’s decision, however, expires in a year unless a new plan takes its place. The Navy had planned to deactivate a carrier air wing and its squadrons in its fiscal 2012 budget to help meet required cuts in defense spending in last year’s Budget Control Act, cutting the number of carrier air wings from 10 to nine. But Deputy Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter later directed the Navy to make funds and manpower available for 10 wings. Greenert’s memo said the plan was “put on hold by the Office of Legislative Affairs due to congressional sensitivity on pending Navy force structure reductions.†Navy spokeswoman Lt. Katie Cerezo said the 2012 National Defense Authorization Act directs the Navy to maintain 10 air wings, and the Navy reversed plans to deactivate CVW-14 in order to comply with the law. The Navy’s plan to reduce its forces has drawn scrutiny from some lawmakers, who say it’s inconsistent with the Obama administration’s new national security strategy. Unless it is reversed before then, Greenert’s decision would mean that after the aircraft carrier Enterprise is decommissioned in 2013 the Navy will have 10 carrier air wings and 10 carriers, though one will be out of operation for refueling and complex overhaul. CVW-14 includes Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 323, Strike Fighter Squadron 154, Strike Fighter Squadron 147, Strike Fighter Squadron 146, Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron 4, Early Warning Squadron 113, Electronic Attack Squadron 139 and Fleet Logistics Squadron 31, Detachment 1. According to this article CVW-14 will be around until at least FY2013. After that its anybody's guess. Currently CVW-14 consists of VAQ-139, VAW-113 and HC-4. The fighter squadrons have moved on to CVW-11. So before it deploys again it will need to 'steal' squadrons from another airwing. Perhaps CVW-2 who looses Abraham Lincoln to SLEP in Virginia or CVW-17 which is going through a transition from LANTFLT to PACFLT. Its interesting to note that when CVW-11 went down VFA-86 moved from MCAS Beaufort to NAS Lemoore and transitioned to the F/A-18E. When CVW-14 went down VAQ-139 transitioned to the E/A-18G. VFA-25 just began transition to the F/A-18E. With the CVW-17 staff moving to Lemoore, one might conclude CVW-17 could be laid up for a while until the dust settles. in 2013 VFA-146 (CVW-11) is set to transition to the F/A-18E and VFA-151 (CVW-2) to the F/A-18F (?! yeah thats what I said too!) in 2014-2015. So we could see all kinds of changes in the works.
hornet97
Nice I forgot that 14 fighter squadrons had already moved to 11. I don't get the 151 f models and not to the e models 2 already has the bounty hunters.
Moffettflyer
I agree 151 transitioning to the F seems wired. But CVW-1 has VFA-11 and VFA-211 both flying the F/A-18F. I read it in a magazine published late last year. Maybe its a typo. But, it was correct about VFA-25 transitioning to the Echo. So who knows. Personally I wish more squadrons flew to Foxtrot. Reminds me of the good old days when Tomcats ruled!
hornet97
Now I agree on more F models but for the tomcat squadrons only not C models squadrons.
GreyGhost
Don't forget, VF(A)-151 used to be in Phantoms so they do have a legacy of two seat jets too ... -Gregg
Moffettflyer
Sweet looking Phantoms also I might add! I'm trying rack my brain and I can't recall any other F/A-18C squadrons that used to fly the Phantom. I think they all transitioned from the A-7. Anyone think of any others ? GreyGhost
Navy side, VF-161 Chargers(Rock Rivers) transitioned into Hornets at the same time as VF-151 ... But they were decommed in 1988 as a part of CVW-10 ... Of course, on the Marine side, most of their Hornet Squadrons came from Phantom units with a few of the AW Units coming from A-6 Squadrons ... -Gregg
Tomas Macourek
Does anyone have a picture of F/A-18A VFA-161 Chargers with NF tailcode? I have just one pic of NF101 and I can not find other. Superscale made decals for this jet (72-551).
GreyGhost
The only pic I've seen of Rock River 101 with NF is in Jay Miller's F/A-18 book from th4e late 80s ... Check out Victory 202 ... MEDITERRANEAN SEA (July 11, 2012) F/A-18 Hornets and F/A-18 Super Hornets from Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 7 fly over the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69). Dwight D. Eisenhower is on a scheduled deployment supporting maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 5th and 6th Fleet areas of responsibility. I guess its too much to hope that 103 would paint the tails on all their Rhino's black huh ? You never know ..during the 2006/2007 cruise, the tails for all the line jets went dk grey. Started off with 204, then the rest followed. I wouldn't be surprised if they did go all black this go around considering the extended deployment they're on.
maveric043
Somebody knows, and to new LOT, VFA-103 is going to change? Andrey.
GreyGhost
Andrey, I don't know if the Jolly Rogers will be changing aircraft while on deployment ... That kind of thing usually happens before work-ups to a deployment so it would probably be sometime next year ... -Gregg

VA-115EFR
Anybody know about when the Gauntlets will be flying the Growler?
Moffettflyer
Anybody know about when the Gauntlets will be flying the Growler? The Gauntlets are undergoing transition currently at Whidbey. Should be safe for flight by the end of the year. Haven't heard what air wing they will go to. My money is CVW-8 which VAQ-141 left to replace VAQ-136 in Japan, but who knows the Navy doesn't alway do the obvious or the easy.
Moffettflyer
VFA-105 has a new color bird. I can't tell if this is their CAG or DCAG. Sorry, I can't figure out how to post the image myself. Edited July 19, 2012 by Moffettflyer
