Greg Herrick's Ford Tri-Motor flew over my house as less than 1000 ft. AGL Friday afternoon (lined up perfectly on my driveway.) The plane has been in Ontario, where they're filming a new movie about Amelia Earhart.

I was out in the back yard taking care of smoking a 7 1/2 pound brisket (which came out GREAT by the way) when I heard a very distinctive "whop-whop-whop" and saw a Cobra followed by a Huey. By the time I ran inside to grab my camera they were gone but here came two more Cobras! Here's a bad photo of them.

I have no clue what unit they were from or what they were doing but I guess they were Texas Army Guard.

So, we spent last week in Cancun. Saw several Mi-8's, especially at Cancun Airport as we were taxiing by the Mexican Army's area. Also saw three C-130's and several smaller aircraft that were in formation with them, but were too far away to make out.

And...up to seven destroyers or frigates on the horizon, and quite often they were joined by what appeared to be a carrier with a ski-jump deck. Pretty sure the Mexican Navy doesn't have carriers...

My little camera wasn't really up to the task, but here's the best pic I got of the mystery ship. It was about 2 to 2 1/2 times the length of its escorts.

Also got to see a fast patrol boat when we were on the ship for the Capitan Hook dinner show that Mideival Times puts on down there.

I saw Marine 1 & 2 flying over Park City, UT the other day where I work. Although I've seen them both several times at their home at MCB Quantico, it took me a moment to remember that el presidente was in town. I enjoyed seeing them over my home turf and was thoroughly motivated.

That "Carrier with a ski jump" is a former Newport class LST. I am assuming it was one that was transfered to the Mex Navy. It actually maybe the Newport herself as she was xfrd. See here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newport_class_tank_landing_ship

Yesterday I was driving into Helena, MT and saw two aggressor aircraft taking off. One was possibly an F-15 as I saw it late but the other was an F-16. They were headed South/Southwest from there.

Today before I left Helena I saw a C-130 take off and fly over.

Back home. While I was outside doing some yard work I saw a KC-135 taking off from the airport. Several minutes later and at a higher altitude I saw a KC-135 flying over my house. I waited to see if anything else was following but no go.

I am headed to South Dakota tomorrow. Hope to see some B-1's flying around and who knows what else.

Saw a UH-60 fly slowly only about 150 feet right over my car through my open sunroof. Then it made a left turn and went parallel to the road near my neighborhood, it did a circle then went in the general direction of Ft. Hood.

Saw a very interesting vehicle on westbound I-66 couple of days ago. All navy blue, no markings, ARMORED cement mixer truck. The back of it looked pretty standard, but the cab was covered by heavy applique armor plates and bullet proof glass. Wish i could take a photo, but the traffic was too heavy.

Nothing lately. Best experience I ever had though was when I was at the CFB base in Goose Bay several years ago. My cousin was an air traffic controller, and I got to go up in the tower and watch the Dutch flying their F-16s. VERY cool!

It was an interesting day today....

I was in my cruiser driving along River Rd, south of our airport. I had the window down. Even over the noise of the police radio I heard the unmistakable sound of Merlins. I looked up and the Vintage Wings of Canada Spitfire and Mustang were flying directly overhead and circled to land at the airport. Figured I'd take a drive to that airport to see what I could see and the Spitfire and Mustang were nowhere to be seen but there were a couple of Dornier Alpha jets from Fast Training (private company contracted by CAF for fighter training) sitting on the ramp outside the Transport Canada hangar. Unfortunately I didn't have my camera. About an hour later, a 412 Sqn Challenger flew directly over the station as I was going in for lunch. I wonder if Capt. Eric Martinat was flying?

Eric is a friend of mine who used to be a Staff Sergeant the Ottawa Police Service. He got his private pilot licence and enlisted in the CAF. He was accepted and after his flight training was posted to 412 Squadron.
