I took a ride down to CLT on Saturday afternoon, and found Michael Jordan's new Gulfstream G-V at the FBO.  It's around CLT enough (MJ is one of the owners of the Charlotte Hornets) but not always in a good spot to shoot.

I was more than surprised to see this Luftwaffe Global 5000 on the ramp at the FBO - I've never seen the Luftwaffe down here, and didn't know they had a Global.  It's been a good start to the year spotting-wise!

The 145th Airlift Wing of the North Carolina Air National Guard, based at CLT, is transitioning from the C-130 to the C-17.  Their last C-130 departed about a month ago, and today, their first C-17 arrived.  It was a lousy day - low clouds, on and off rain, just perfect conditions.  This aircraft, like the rest they will get, came from the 437th Airlift Wing in Charleston.

Accompanying the first C-17 was another C-17, this one carrying special markings commemorating the 70th Anniversary of the North Carolina ANG.

That pattern is called "elephant print", and can be found applied to several sneaker models across the Air Jordan footwear line.  I have two different pairs with that pattern.  On a plane, its unique for sure, and more striking than the previous white with powder blue stripe/accent.  Marketing is everything.  This brings to mind the reaction to Americans current scheme when it was first rolled out to the public.

Was in Florida last week and got to see the SpaceX launch of the TESS satellite. We were six miles due west of Pad 40, this is a crop of a full frame image.

B-29 Fifi is sitting around 3 km from me right now. The photos was through a fence so its not worth showing. No idea why its sitting at my local airport. Nothing airshow happening here.

Not today, but a couple of weeks ago on our way to the IPMS Nationals in Phoenix, we spent a day in North Las Vegas photographing Red Flag 18-3 participants. I really enjoyed watching fairly high-intensity air operations. Would have liked to see the B-52s and the Colombian Kfirs that were there fly, but what we did see was great.

Cheers,

Scott

I'll play, but mine are 2 years old.  Nellis AFB "Aviation Nation" in November 2016.  Sadly there was no air show this year, but there should be one in 2019.

Took a ride to CLT this afternoon to get a few shots of the Antonov that showed up at 2am.

While we were shooting the Antonov, I saw something unusual arriving on 36R and I realized it was the Orbis Flying Eye Hospital DC-10!!!  Orbis operates this aircraft in developing countries to provide eye care, as well as to teach local doctors.  It is a state-of-the-art facility with operating rooms and teaching areas.  This aircraft was donated to Orbis by FedEx, who also provide maintenance.  It replaced an earlier DC-10, also donated by FedEx.  In 2009, the older DC-10 was at LGA for several days, and a group of us got to tour it and see the onboard medical facilities.

Its National Day here in the UAE, and these guys were flying around the entire country along with their air force acrobatic display team.  I didnt have the time to head out to a better viewing spot, but I did see that the final flyby was very close to my apartment, so I took these from my balcony.
