Took a ride to CLT this afternoon to get a few shots of the Antonov that showed up at 2am.

While we were shooting the Antonov, I saw something unusual arriving on 36R and I realized it was the Orbis Flying Eye Hospital DC-10!!!  Orbis operates this aircraft in developing countries to provide eye care, as well as to teach local doctors.  It is a state-of-the-art facility with operating rooms and teaching areas.  This aircraft was donated to Orbis by FedEx, who also provide maintenance.  It replaced an earlier DC-10, also donated by FedEx.  In 2009, the older DC-10 was at LGA for several days, and a group of us got to tour it and see the onboard medical facilities.

Talk about right place, right time.  The original DC-10 that this one replaced was the second one off the assembly line back in 1970, guess it was time for an upgrade.

Some things with wings that take an advanced degree in aerodynamics to create...  After the final race of the F1 season here in the sandbox, the teams stayed a few extra days to do some tire testing with Pirelli.  I took advantage of living very close to the track to dust off my camera & grab some pics since the crowds were all gone .

The team formerly known as Force India's pink livery matched well with the pink hypersoft tires.

Both Red Bull and Renault ran some mystery tires with no sidewall colors.

Mercedes & Ferrari were the only teams I notice to run the yellow softs

Renault was the only team to run the mediums that session from what I saw.

Everyone spent time on the ultrasoft purples.

Not today, specifically, but these were all over the past week:
This Miramar-based UC-35 is not an uncommon visitor to my area, but until last week, I'd only ever seen it parked - I got lucky on my way home from work, and happened to catch it on final just before the sun went down.

The next day, I got off work a few minutes early, and made it just in time to catch this KC-46A doing some pattern work on a pre-delivery test flight - I'm hoping this becomes a common sight as production ramps up, since I'm not able to get up to BFI or PAE anywhere near as often as I used to.

And last, yesterday I got a pretty awesome opportunity to take a tour of CVN-70, the USS Carl Vinson while it's in port for some renovations and upgrades. I took quite a few photos, but most are strictly for the personal collection. Figured I could share this one though; I got a good chance to poke around the old F/A-18A instructional airframe on deck - best I can tell, this airframe came from the Stennis before she left on her most recent deployment, but I couldn't find a tail number or data plate anywhere, so I'm not sure of the exact identity of this jet. I always like getting to capture aircraft that are considered derelict, forgotten, or out to pasture, since it seems once they stop flying, most people lose interest. I feel like this is still an important stage of their lives to document, if nothing else, to help complete their history.

Nice catch on the -46. And in beautiful lighting. Looks like that very aircraft is enroute for delivery to Altus AFB today. I'm hoping to catch it on arrival in a few hours for the acceptance ceremony.

Saw an F-16D with the Israeli-style spine; the local Arizona ANG is training foreign pilots, in their own machines apparently.

They train the Iraqi Air Force there using their own Block 52+ jets.

To butcher an old saying - if it's a Boeing, I ain't going.   Gonna be sitting there for quite a while by all accounts.

Nice looking paint scheme though, I like the "mask" on the cockpit windows.

Maintenance flights are allowed.... good time for necessary upgrades to the WIFI and IFE which is happening. Hope Boeing gets an upgrade to the auto pilot soon.

A CV-22B Osprey stopped for fuel at our local airport  (Zanesville, OH) 3/12/19 and the pilot also got to visit his grandfather that lives here.

I asked for a fly by when he left and he was kind enough to grant my request.

Stopped through Love Field on Friday afternoon, otw home from a business trip. Saw one of the last EA-6Bs sitting at the Jet Center, wings folded on the T-ramp. Then the Collins Foundation B-17 and B-24 landed.

When we were at Whiteman in August, we did two laps around the perimeter of the base and saw a pair of B-2s take off. It's definitely worth your while to go by. There's a nice B-29 at the gate as well.

Good luck spotting!

Cheers,

Scott

V-22 flew over the other day. I'd never seen one in flight, only static. What amazed me was how quiet it was, I didn't hear it coming, only heard once it was almost right over me, once passed over, quickly became quiet again.....maybe I need to get my ears checked!

Not today, but yesterday... got to see quite a few pretty cool things, including one of the F-16s that was scrambled over DC on 9/11...

Saw two penguins (F-35) overfly my house here in Crestview Florida, and happily see regularly F-15's & F-16's from the Eglin test center as well as F-22's that are temporarily flying out of Eglin since the hurricane shattered Tyndal.  Sorry you F-35 fans, just don't like the penguin . . . .
