I took these from Nanaimo, It looks like an Arleigh Burke DDG to me.

I am assuming that they are using the torpedo range at Nanoose just up the road from us.

something different from the usual container ships and ferry traffic

sorry if the image quality is really crummy, all i have is a 250mm lens and it is pretty hazy today

well it's definitely working in Nanoose as it is now parked there.

maybe they wanted a change of scenery, or the use of a GOOD range ;)

Not today, but a couple of days ago... Sitting on a beach north of Ocracoke village, NC playing ball with the dog when this little loverly came choppering north up the beach... Not bad for a 105mm lens! MH-60S of HSC-26 out of NAS Norfolk. Anyone know the BuNo on side number 60?

Hello all,

This was two nights ago, but I was just pulling back into the driveway from running errands and I heard a louder than normal jet noise above. I looked up and saw a B-1B hustling to catch up to a KC-135 that was flying due east towards Lake Michigan. It was near dusk and I don't have a stellar lens for my camera, but here are the two aircraft. I have yet to see any refueling action up in Green Bay, though I know others who have. I was pretty happy to see it, though, I just wish I could have seen them actually refueling....oh well. Beggars can't be choosers!

:D, Nothing today but two days ago (Sunday) at Maitland there was a number of visiting aircraft and a local I've never seen before. The visitors included an Maule Rocket and a Robinson R-22. The local resident was a Corby Starlet. I got some pics of them all plus some of the RNAC fleet including the Piper Archer that I went up in with my AAL OC, also a private pilot and RNAC member. As I have to go out now I'll amend this post with the pics tomorrow.

I have not seen it but there is a Tu-154M taking photos across the country this week. Believe its flying out of CFB Trenton with RCAF escort.

Russian plane to snap photos over Canada

A Russian military plane will fly over Canada this week, taking photographs of cities, military bases and just about anything else that looks interesting.

If a plane bearing the red star of the Russian air force entered our airspace 30 years ago, Canadian jetfighters would have scrambled to intercept it. NORAD would have watched closely and NATO's planes in Europe might have been put on alert.

This week, a Russian military plane will spend three days as a guest of this country. Members of the Canadian Armed Forces will escort the unarmed Russian Tupolev TU-154M, acting as friendly hosts.

The Russians may use video, regular cameras, infrared sensors and even a form of radar as they pass over our cities, military bases, transport hubs and industrial sites.

The visit and data collection are part of the Treaty on Open Skies, which allows signatories to take a close look at any of the 34 nations that are members of the agreement.

The goal of the treaty is to reassure all the nations that no other member is preparing a military assault or developing weapons of mass destruction.

The treaty went into effect in 2002 and this will be the eighth time a member nation has asked to make an observation flight over Canada. In all, more than 800 Open Skies flights have been carried out globally, including some by C-130 Hercules planes flown by Canadian crews.

As a member, we give up some sovereignty, but the payoff is the ability to check up on other signatories. That's more than a fair trade.

During the Cold War the world had to count on MAD: mutually assured destruction. The theory dictated that the United States and the Soviet Union would never start a nuclear war because they could not win such a war. If one side bombed the other, they could be assured their opponent had plenty of missiles and enough time to strike back. There could be no winner left standing.

Thankfully, it was a theory that worked. The fact that mankind had to count on MAD illustrates how close we were to nuclear war for so many years.

Today we have Open Skies and we can all breathe a little easier.

By opening up our skies to any member nation, we prove that we are not trying to develop weapons designed to harm them.

The process is, in a word, open.

All the photographic and imaging equipment used during the over-flights must be commercially available. That means no nation will have an advantage with regard to the quality of information gathered.

The playing field is further leveled after flight data has been collected. The treaty allows any member nation to request the data collected by any other nation, as long as they help pay costs. Members don't have to fly over every member's territory on a regular basis; they can just ask to see the material from other nations' flights.

Maybe the most surprising piece of information is that just 34 nations have signed on to Open Skies. Given its ease of use and the payoff – mutual trust – one has to wonder why more countries aren't keen to join.

I didn't see it today and it's not aviation related but on July 9th, while on vacation in Boston, I went with my cousin to visit 'Battleship Cove ' in Fall River, Massachusetts and toured the retired battleship USS Massachusetts, submarine USS Lionfish and destroyer USS Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Amazing! Photos not uploaded yet but will post some later. WOW!

July 14th... Saw a Mirage F1, a C-135FR followed by 4 Mirage 2000N or D, later some more Mirage F1s. All were going to Paris to take part in the air parade over Champs Elysées. I heard some more jets but didn't see them, they must have been flying over the clouds.

Saw that Fouga from Sean's post today at a very small local air show. Highlight was the Yankee lady B-25 hitch only flew once giving a ride and an AD-1 skyraider that arrived after we got there made on pass and landed. All in all a crap air show but whatever.
