Under the category "Ya never have a camera handy when ya needs one".....while outside on my back deck...4 USMC AH-1?'s flew over in a typical finger four formation....A SWAG says they were coming from 29 Palms and heading to Camp Pendelton....what they were doing are going to do is beyond me, but they were distinctive and up around 2K somewheres. I was able to determine the basic aircraft, the variant well...I suppose whatever they're flying at 29 Palms.

Not bad for a grey windy day in Ottawa

President of South Korea arriving in a 747-400 leased from Korean Airlines by the Korean Air Force

Wayne

Nice shot Wayne. I was only able to get some through the fence at Hangar 11 later that day. Also had 2 CH-147's and 4 CH-146 fly right over my house that day. Flew in for the Battle of Britain Parade. Only got grounds shots. Camera was at work when they flew over.

I'm back up in New York for the weekend, and the trip wouldn't be complete without a quick stop at JFK...

Is that a tornado or just a nasty storm cell?

Tim

It was a nasty cell, but there was slight rotation to it. Thankfully the condition where not quite right for it to spin into a tornado. It would have been hug if it did. Now, people around here have the April 27, 2010 outbreak fresh in our minds. I can look in the my back yard and see the changes it made to the landscape and all over town. If I called it wrong its only because myself and the people around here are hyper alert during bad weather.

Here is a view from the roof of my house that day. My shop is the red shed on the right and there use to be a large tool shed which is crushed under the tree.

  • 2 weeks later...

Not today, but last week, the Collins Foundation Wings of Freedom tour stopped in at the Hickory Aviation Museum. They were supposed to arrive on Wednesday afternoon, spend the day Thursday, then head to Spartanburg, SC on Friday for the weekend. Poor weather delayed their arrival until Thursday afternoon, and I took a ride out after work to shoot them.

P-51C "Betty Jane"

This aircraft is painted in the markings of WWII Ace Charles "Sandy" McCorkle. Early in the war, McCorkle flew British Spitfire fighters, loaned to the USAAF, and shot down 5 enemy aircraft, earning the "Ace" title. He then transitioned to the P-51, where he shot down another 6 enemy aircraft. McCorkle was a native of Newton, NC, only 15 miles away from the Hickory airport, site of the museum.

This North American FJ-3M Fury is part of the museum collection, but it was in a nice spot so I got a couple of shots. We're talking about doing a full night shot of their ramp.

Spent last Thursday evening doing a photo shoot at RAF Northolt in London (they run them twice a year). Always a varied selection of aircraft there but never more than 8-10 and sometimes less (it depends on what the organisers are able to invite and what doesn't go tech or get re-tasked at short notice). Sadly, the Securite Civile Tracker firebomber was a no-show this time round.

Regards,

John
