ALL SCALES - Shake 'n Bake kits

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

Well, I posted a similar thread on 1/48 scale Shake 'n Bake kits a while back. I'd like to compile a complete list of all 1/32, 1/48, 1/72, 1/144 etc aircraft that we would consider Shake 'n Bake kits that are relatively accurate ;-) It would be nice to have a complete list to refer to and build up the stash with kits that provide a nice break from the myriad of kits out there that frustrate us to no end - albeit they can also be fun it's nice to have a mindless break every now and again ;-)

Please post both modern day and historical aircraft in all scales. Give as much detail as possible about the specific kit as in some cases there are multiple renditions from the same manufacturer and yet they may not be the same in terms of fit, finish or accuracy.

Once complete I would like to compile a summary with all our pics and perhaps we could have our selection sticky noted for future reference.

My pics would be:

1/48: Tamiya F-16CJ

1/48: Revell F-15E (US boxing or Revell Germany boxing)

My picks are:

1/48 Tamiya

Mustangs

thunderbolts

corsairs

F-16 (the only flaws I found were self-induced)

Revell

F-15E

Hasegawa

Me-109s

As a secondary thread, maybe we should do toughest kit and most rewarding.

In both instances, my pick would be hasegawa 1/48 tomcat. A major PITA, but at the same time stretched my skills.

My choices would be:

1/48 Tamiya:

A-1 skyraiders series

Me-262's

FW-190d-9

Ki-46 dinah's

1/48 Hasegawa:

F4U-5, -7, AU-1

KI-61 Tony series

Ki-43 Oscars

Me-109 series

F-86 series

Ki-84

Ki-44 tojo

1/32 scale Hasegawa

Me-109G and K

Ki-84 frank

ki-61 tony

P-47D

1/32 tamiya

F-16C

Just a quick list off the top of my head. I've built all of these as shelf fodder (shake and bakes) and all were easy builds with minimal filling, fiddling, etc.

I have to disagree on Revell's F-15E 1/48. I have two of them, and both have the upper fuselage badly warped. So for me this isn't definitely a "shake 'n' bake" kit. Just my two Eurocents.

Ditto on that. Good kit no doubt, but I neither had a shake-and-back experience. I think I'll chalk that up to Revellograms variable quality. Hasegawa and Tamiya have more consistant quality kits (in other words, little variation from box to box of the same kit).

Another case in point is the new Revellogram Superhornet. Some people have reported very few problems in assembly (joints, seams) while others like myself have had significant issues. I've built 2 now and hesitate to build another.

I'll add a few..

1/48 Tamiya

Me-262

Fw-190 A3 & F8 & D9

A-1H

1/48 Hasegawa

A-4 series

Bf-109 series

F-8

The most rewarding for me to build, was my 1/48 A-6E. It was the second kit I built after returning to the hobby, and the first kit I employed a wash, and used my new airbrush.

It's been a few years since I built it,but the Hasegawa 1/48 scale A-7E was a dream. With my skills, even Lego's come with fit issues.....but I was able to turn out a reasonably good shelf model.

Full Afterburner....

In 1/48 I'd have to say Tamiya's F4D and Hase's A-4E and A-7E. All went together with no real issues. In 1/32, Academy's Delta Hornet. Yeah, I know, there's a lot of plastic, but it all went together well with only one minor joint to fill.....Cliff

Academy's Spitfire XIVe. Fits like a dream and I never would have known about the minor accuracy issues if they were not pointed out to me. Academy decals truly suck though. Why don't they do something about this?

AMtech Ta 183.

Tamiya F4F Wildcat. First kit I built when I got back into the hobby a few years ago. I asked the guy at the hobby shop for a cheap, simple, accurate 1/48 prop. It turned out nice and I keep coming back for more.
