Dr. Tran
Pirates are indeed cool! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZLsJyfN0ICU But as for Navy squadrons, I'll take the Checkmates any day.
J.C. Bahr
I didn't realize we had such a sensitive crowd here. You obviously haven't been around long enough! ;) I simply asked what is it about the Jolly Rogers that makes everyone want to model them. I don't think that is a very offensive topic. But the rest of you....what's your story? What makes you put the Jollys on 8 out of 10 models? One of the first movies I ever remember watching as a little kid was "The Final Countdown" and a few years later one of the first models I ever built was a Revell 1/48 Tomcat that came with those markings. Painted it SILVER! Still have the model (which has survived many years) to remind me how badly I su*ked at building models when I first started! Have another Cat in the stash earmarked for those markings again someday out of nostalgia, but never seem to have the motivation to build it now since ya can't get away from them here. No offense to the builders, but I always skip past any article of a Cat (and now the Superbugs) wearing these markings now. They're cool and all, but nearly so "yesterday" now. Brian P: Fightertown Decals
I never worried what other people were building. I build what I want to build. I like seeing other people's builds to see what I can learn or help improve my skills. I think it's good to see the fact that people are building models, whether they have the skull and bones or fast check, or puking dog, or aren't even a Tomcat. As to why people like them - some people think they look cool, have a great history, have a personal connection, be that a movie, airshow, picture or imagination! I like Oreo cookies, but that's another discussion... -brian
VFA-103guy
Despite my previous post, what I found insulting was your term "geek boner for Jolly Rogers", not your question per say. The only thing I get boners over are hot women., and obviously this isn't the place to discuss that. What I find fascinating is, as a former decal manufacturer, every time I released a VF-84, VF-103, or VFA-103 decal sheet, they'd be gone in a short period of time. I now see guys paying in upwards of $40-$100 on ebay for a sheet I retailed for $20 at the time of its release. Why are they so popular? Because, besides VF-31 and VF-111, they are the most highly recognized squadron in the world. As for me, I have personal connections to the squadron which is why I like them so much. PNW_Modeler
You haven't ever heard the term "geek boner"? Apperently you don't work in the tech field and hang out with nerds and computer geeks all day like I do....Geek boner is not meant as an insult....It's like "Seeing the Iron Man trailer gave me a huge geek boner....I am so stoked for that movie!" Like you said, besides the Jollys, VF-31 and VF-111 are the most recognized squadron in the world....yet it's the Jollys we see on model kits every where....well, I guess we see a decent share of Felix too....but I am surprised we don't see more of the Sundowners...they have a great looking scheme Now like you mentioned....you have a personal connection.....I can totally understand that. But what I don't get is what the Jolly Rogers have that say....the Bounty Hunters don't....or the Swordsmen..... It's not something I worry about....more just a thinking out loud, trying to get into people's heads and find out what makes them lean towards one squadron more than others. I am just as guilty....I am a Diamondbacks fan. I like the way their markings look
BlackThor 06
Personally, I find it the skull sinister looking (read cool). Add it to a black backdrop and, well, I get a geek boner...! For me, nothing beats an overall gull gray VF-84 Tomcat with black tails. Seeing shark mouths are my thing, too. VF-111 F-14s are my second choice for markings. BT6
David Walker
I can't say that I personally find them very interesting. They just seem a bit overdone.
geedubelyer
.......(~snip~)...... they are the most highly recognized squadron in the world. Oh,......you mean World as in: The Baseball WORLD series, where no-one else in the world plays? Or the NFL "World" Champions......... So I guess no-one else has ever heard of, say, 617 (The Dambusters)Squadron? Heh, heh,.... I'm just fooling with you Brian, I,m not serious about it. As for the popularity of certain squadrons, perhaps it's more to do with geography? There are members on ARC from every corner of the world but the majority are from N. America. If you visit other forums, people there are into different things closer to their hearts. ;) Edited October 28, 2007 by geedubelyer
Brian P: Fightertown Decals
I happen to believe that you'll be seeing more models of VF-111 in a few months. Why? Hmmm, maybe I know sumthin'.... -brian
I.Martin
Good question.I think that watching "The final Countdown" film for the first time when we were younger was a point of inflexion in our lives,a shock that will last forever!!.But that doesn´t means we don´t like other squadrons, the Pukin´ Dogs are really cool too.Anyway,we miss the Tomcat in all her colors.Get it BACK!!! ´Fear the Bones´ I.Martin

TonyH
Frankly, I think it is a fair question.......From all the hype, one could surmise that the Jolly Rogers are all gods & we but mere worms. Honestly guys.......hold on to your jock straps here......I'm so sick of the JRs that I'll be selling all the decal sheets, even the Santa Cat ones. Might even unload some Tomcats & Hornets while I'm at it..... This is my opinion......am I'm not ducking.... BTW....anybody got an answer for Paul???? "First With Guns", Jim Nancy Nancy Nancy What the heck have you been smoking Susan
ReccePhreak
Actually, they do ... Ever since they've had TARPS equipped Tomcats and SHARPS equipped Rhinos ... Gregg Those aren't "real" recce birds. IMHO. Heck, they don't even qualify for the upcoming Recce Group Build. Larry
RCoulter52
Are y'all ready for a real upsetting reply? I never even heard of the 'Jolly Rogers' until I started on this forum!!! Go 'Fighting Redcocks'!!!! <duck & run> Just kidding!! About the 'Jolly's' that is!!

Now I've got that playin' in my head all day long! For a second, I actually also thought about posting that... :o You haven't ever heard the term "geek boner"? I actually found that "geek boner"and "Jolly Rogers" connection very funny, from a pun point of view. I happen to believe that you'll be seeing more models of VF-111 in a few months. :D closet Johnny Depp fans??? stealthy1
Wow, 4 pages of responses in just over 12 hours, nice. Anyways, really I'll have to agree that the JR are of the most highly recognized squadrons in the world, especially with their publicity in The Final Countdown. Not only that, but they've also had a rich history too; the way they survived 2 Navy Budget Axes to come back as another squadron always hit me as something special. Plus the Tomcat always looks good with White on Black tails. The Hornet.....no comment, but still looks ok.
smithery
I can't say that I personally find them very interesting. They just seem a bit overdone. I'm with you on this one David. I don't personally have a problem with the whole Jolly Rogers geek boner........different strokes for different folks (pun intended) They just don't appeal to me. Anytime I see a JR build, or a new product announcement that features JR, my general reaction is ho-hum. I just find a lack of originality when every single scheme the JR ever flew has been done by one decal manufacturer or another. JR builds rank up there with Showtime 100 and the "famous" Shamrock F-4J......it's been done. Personally, I like to see the original schemes on build, or at least the lesser known schemes. But hey, what do I know? If the JR is what floats your boat, all the power to you. It's your hobby too. Edited October 28, 2007 by smithery
VFA-103guy
You haven't ever heard the term "geek boner"? Can't say that I have. I occasionally do IT work, but I don't hang around computer geeks all that much. Actually, it is kind of funny...
Johnopfor
Why does everyone have the huge geek boner for the Jolly Rogers? HEHEHEHE....HEHEHEHE....HEHEHE....You said boner....HEHEHEHE....HEHEHE........ Actually, when I get my "geek boner" on, my wife's in trouble... ;) I mean, it's just a skull and crossbones.... There you go, you said it yourself........skull and crossBONES........(Of course the visuals on what the tail art would look like would be, well...upstanding??) The only US Navy squadron in the air that won't have to use Viagra or Cialis to "keep it up"........ As with my facination, how about the incident with Lt. Burris when he ran a truck off of the road while flying his Corsair low off of the groud....INVERTED!! Or Lt. Kepfords habit of getting into mock dogfights with visitors over downtown Norfolk, VA (such incidents got them kicked out of Norfolk and re-assigned to Manteo, NC. Plus, I saw them in "The Final Countdoen".......and of course the black-tailed Tomcats in "Executive Decision" was the best part of the movie. eizzle
I, personally, like the Yellow on Black scheme, but the skull and crossbones are cool to! I think there is something with the choices or colors, I mean, when Dewalt tools came about, everybody loved them, was it brand reputation, I doubt it, it was probably because they were yellow and black... sorry, just talking out of my *** now! I like the color scheme they use, and thats about it...
Hornet78
Gotta agree!!! It has also been related to two of the ugliest jets ever...The Tomcat and the Super Hornet :D . I'll pretend I didn't hear that Mike There are a few reasons why they are so popular. One there is nother other logo on a jet tail thats looks as bad *** as the Skull and cross bones, Hell the Pirates of yore use it to intimidate others on the high seas. The you also have the most popular color combo of Black and Gold "yes this was proven in some study a few years ago and has nothing to do with the JR's. And finally while others may disagree the F-14 Is Cool looking "Mike" Swing wings/ Shoots a bigger missile than the Eagle ever did and still drops bombs and then you have all those cool 70's high vis scheams. Whats not to like. You can have all your boring ghost grey/Gunship grey F-15 till the cows come home, Nohtning and i mean nothing beats an old Highvis Gull grey over white JR bird from back in the day! Flame X on and ready to recieve fire Jim . . . . . . . . . .. . . . . . . . .. couldnt resist :)
Henrik B
I just don't get it at all. How can you be a "fan" of a squadron? Yes, if you work there you should have some pride in it, but to me it seems like being a fan of a specific fire department or something...
