Electra II
Can any of you F-100 Experts tell (on the photo of T-Bird #9) whether that little door above the port side national insignia is supposed to be open? Or did someone miss something on preflight perhaps?

Ben Brown
Woo hoo! F-100s!!! Electra, that open door on the F-100F is a dump for excess high pressure air from the compressor section of the engine. At low power settings, the compressor sometimes pumps more air through the engine than it can swallow, so they dump the excess overboard. If that valve fails, you can get a compressor stall, where the engine hiccups and blows fire out the intake. Willieself, I recently found out that 56-3093 never did serve with the Thunderbirds. It got a tail section from an ex-T-Bird after it suffered some damage to its original aft fuselage. I'll dig through my collection and post a few. Cheers! Ben Brown
Here are a few from my collection. This is Maj. Don Schmenk flying 55-3580, the jet he was assigned to in VN. Cutting Edge just released 1/32 decals for it. (Photo via Don Schmenk) Thunderbirds F-100C ca. 1958, pre-bird-on-the-belly. (USAF) Ten years later, my dad took this one of the F-100Ds. (Ben A. Brown) Zoom from a photo showing three RF-100As flying in formation. This is the only photo I've found that shows the camera canoes on the belly. (NRO) Skyblazers F-100C. (USAF) Misty FAC taking on fuel. (USAF) More later. Ben

RotorheadTX
F-100 two-holer on a post; gate guard at the Fayette Regional Air Center Airport just outside La Grange, Texas. She used to wear a badly faded SEA scheme, but has recently been repainted in these T-Birds colors.

hooter
Many thanks for the 'Hun' pics, Bill. Iwas particularly taken with the two photos of 'Triple Zilch' as I remember seeing her many times during her time with the 20th. TFW at Wethersfield. I live approx. 7 miles from the former USAFE base, and spent many a school holiday watching the 'Huns' coming and going over the boundary fence. It's nice to know that 'Triple Zilch' still exists, although she would look better in her original colour scheme, complete with tail flash, etc! :D ;)
