Two Mikes
Hi all Well I am about to lay paint on the gear wells of my 1/48 F-104G Marineflieger kit and I have conflicting refs....or just bad eyes. I know the bottom of the jet is silver grey paint. My issue is with the gear bays and struts as well as wheel hubs themselves. Most pics I have seen show them in silver but I do have some with white struts but no clear shots of the gear bays on those jets. Sooooo, should I just go silver bays, wheel hubs and silver struts?? Silver bays, white struts and wheel hubs? or silver bays, silver struts and black wheel hubs (on the mains)?? Ideas?? Help?? Cheers Mike
RedIndian
I would say you are not wrong if you use aluminum paint for the struts, wells and bays.
PeepingBear
The underside of Bundesluftwaffe and MarFlg Starfighters was painted in RAL 9006 "Weissaluminium", but that color weathered really quick. You might consider using light grey (approx. FS 36375 ~ RAL 7001 "Silbergrau") with a tad of metallic sheen mixed in, unless you want to depict a arsenal-fresh aircraft. Later, for the Tornado and the Lynx (helo) , the Marineflieger changed the underside paint to RAL 7035 "Lichtgrau", approx. FS 35630. A good research base is Don Color's website (links directly to the MarFlg F-104 Norm 76 scheme). The landing gear bays of the F-104Gs that I've seen over here in Germany were painted in aluminum dope. Have to see my first Starfighter with white u/c and whells yet... HTH Happy Holidays! F-16 Weapons
Sorry about that, I looked too fast at the title and thought it was for the TF-104G only and didn't scroll down. I am really looking forward to the release of those. They look absolutely beautiful. Thanks for the clarification. LIengineerBob
Please keep me (US!!) posted on the F104 stuff!! At last I'm not the only one to have noticed the "Rivets" detail on these kits. As Danny says, the F-104 was a beautiful, smooth machine, and even in close-up photos the rivets were almost invisible. While the Hasegawa kits capture the shape of the F-104, they went overboard with surface detail, having raised panels where there were none, etc. Also, has anyone else noticed the difference in the thickness of the fin/rudder and wing/flaps/leading edge flaps? Perhaps I'm being too picky, but I'll not build my F-104s until Dave's superb decals & update sets are available. OK . . .that's my I should be building a model! over, but I do feel strongly about the most beautiful airplane ever built !

I tried to say that I've had my moan, etc. but I keep getting "I should build my model" Never mind, i think you all get the general idea ! Sorry about that.  :o That's perfectly okay. It 's just that Steve has the boards automatically replace the word you wanted to type (starts wit an r and ends on ant, doesn't it?) with "I should be building a model!". Steve figures we should be building more models instead of venting on the boards. :D But, on a side note, that also created a very nice short-cut to type that one should be building more models. Four letters instead of 29!
