Other photography besides aviation

Had a fishing companion today, just sat there all the time without bothering to jump out of the way.

Awwww...how convenient. :)

Going to George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary (I know...summer, not the best time to go, but I'm goin' anyways) tomorrow with the 600/4. Nope... Went to Iona Beach instead. (pics to follow)

1st Great Blue Heron sighting of the Day. - Colony Farm Regional Park - Coquitlam, BC.

Packed up there...all we were seeing were trees...and the wood-ducks were too skittish to photograph. Headed for Iona Beach Regional Park just northwest of YVR. Low-tide, whole seige of herons...

I stopped by to visit Foamhenge today. I had read about this mystical place before, but recently discovered that it was located just off I-81 in Natural Bridge, VA - a place I had passed several times when heading down to Charlotte. After spending the weekend at the All Chrysler Nationals in Carlisle, PA, I headed down I-81 for home, but not before a short detour to visit Foamhenge.

This sculpture was built in 2004 by local artist Mark Cline (just one of a number unusual sites he has created in the area). It is an exact replica, positioned in correct astrological position, of the better-know Stonehenge monument on the Salisbury Plains of England, and located on the top of a hill in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

In the eerie silence, you can sense the presence of ancient Styrofoam Druids.

Decided to upload my images into a slideshow. This is a test run (I'm going to get my friend (trumpet) and I (Harpsichord-continuo) to do this piece for the soundtrack of the slideshow; just temporarily using Ludwig Guttler's rendition of Telemann's Trumpet Concerto in D+ - Adagio (TWV51: D7) right now).

My first attempt at star trails, only used 13 30sec exposures, gotta get the focus a bit better but with time and practice I think I can get some decent shots.

Awesome shots of Steveston. dylan.

As for me, I'm heading out to Green Timbers to shoot some mallards. Figure since I turned my FB into a FB fan page; I'd start making sure that I have plenty of NEW content out there. :) Gotta work that 600/4. :D

A set of Lee ND grad filters is in the mix for purchasing - xmasleeNDgradbundle.jpg

I have the holder (the contraption to fit the filters to my lens) as per my photo on my FB site.

969035_622595437765080_570979820_n.jpg

The soft graduated neutral-density filters have a way of taking regular ho-hum skies and making them seriously pop.

In some ways, this is an addiction worse than scale modeling. Some of you have kit stashes numbering in $100,000 range. $100,000 just gets me a set of super-telephoto lenses (600mm f/4, 500mm f/4 (for traveling). 400mm f/2.8, 300mm f/2.8, 200mm f/2, 200-400mm f/4 VRII, 14-24mm f/2.8, 24-70mm f/2.8, 70-200mm f/2.8, 2 D4s, several batteries, lens filters and a bunch of other gear...that is necessary for serious professional photography as well as being able to buy air fare to shoot in some exotic locales for a change of pace). Yeah...you can never have enough lenses.

It was a great day at Green Timbers today. The sky was blue, the sun was shining, the ospreys were poopin' rainbows and I was rockin' my 600mm. Now if I had caught the osprey in a dive, I'd be even more happy, but alas it was not to be. Well...I'll get the bugger one of these days.

Tooting my OLDEST son's achievement this time... My oldest son has been bitten by the wildlife photography bug (yes, a bug more insidious than the regular photography bug). So, he is not only an athlete (hockey player), but also an impressive photographer in his own right at 11 years of age.

This is HIS shot...not mine...HIS. This shot was taken with my D50 that I gave to him. 70-200mm f/2.8 VRII +TC-20EIII which he is borrowing.

Sometimes the shot comes to you, other times you just have to wait.

http://500px.com/photo/41401232 - "I Am Not Amused" - the expression of this barn swallow says it all.

http://500px.com/photo/41414600 - "Hey! Watch Where You're Going!" - a shot of a divebombing crow as it passes by a screaming bald eagle.

These are the shots that I've been waiting for; thanks to the 600mm f/4.

Staring Down The Barrel by falconrosephotography, on Flickr

This is what the bird sees when you point a 600mm f/4 at 'em.

And this is the kind of reaction you get out of them.

07-25-2013_SFW_barn_swallow_isnotamused_wm.jpg

Frankly, this barn swallow wasn't sure whether to attack me or attack the lens. And you ain't seen "aggressive" until you've seen a barn swallow swooping down on someone who gets too close to their nest. They may be small, but pound for pound, they're an avian MMA fighter; meaner than heck and willing to take on all comers.
