KMC 727-200 1/72nd scale airport Diorama

Recommended Posts

Well here is the new Swany project. A 72nd scale diorama of the KMC 727 in the gate about to finish up loading baggage and passengers and push back for departure to parts unknown. I am going to test my scratchbuilding skills on this. I bought this kit from Lenny here on ARC and just had to start it. I have cut out the bagage door, built up the cargo area with sheet and strip, just enought to look busy not that you will see it when it is on the tarmac. Also I have started on the baggage loader. I used the Fujimi Fire Engine and cut it up and made the loading conveyor with sheet and "L" and round strip. I will fabricate the raising sissors when I get the 727 built up in order to check the height. I am planning on adding a full cockpit with pilots and a flight engineer. I am going to use the KC-135 cockpit that Frank Steffens so graciously is sending me. I have ordered Kurts resin nose but from what I can tell the kit nose doesnt look that bad and I dont really care to grind thru the resin for the windows. I have gathered all of my Hasegawa ground kits and Fujimi Carrier kits to rob figures and vehicles in order to make it a busy ramp. I am also planning on scratchbuilding the jet bridge. I was sent the article from FSM from Trojan Thunder and will scale up the drawings to 72 scale. I have asked several of the ARC Airline Pilots to get a photo from inside the cockpit of the terminal so I can blow that up and use as a backdrop for the jetbridge. The first photo is the basic idea of what I want it to look like, I got this from Airliners.net. Enjoy Erick

Erick, I hope you'll reconsider using the excellent nose correction from Kurt Lehmann to fix the "cheekiness" of the KMC nose. The windows shouldn't be too big of a deal to grind out in 1/72.

Here is a comparison someone did over at airlinercafe (Kurt's nose on the left...KMC's nose is horrible):

Also, there is a nice walkaround of a series 200 over there. Here is one pic that might help you with that bulk hold:

Erick,

Glad to see you've started with the triple-holer of yours (and what a start! looks terrific!!) Wish you the best with this project, hope to start someday too... (btw have you by any chance got any drawings/schematics for the B727, other than those in Boeing's site:

http://www.boeing.com/commercial/airports/acaps/727sec2.pdf? I'm (unsuccesfully) trying to find any)

Cheers!

Hey, nice opening photo - from Toronto's Pearson(from roof of old Terminal 1 - spent lots of time there!!) The view and Cara truck help I.D. it!!

Have to see how this turns out - heard so much of the KMC kit being such a pig...

Well here's todays update. Made the baggage cart and the tow bar. Added strip to the Hasegawa dolly and will cover that in tissue soaked in glue for the canvas cover. The tow bar is a piece of rod styrene and some bits from the tank dolly. Got a link from Pboilermaker for a great picture of the cargo bay so redid that part so now it looks pretty close what do you think? Found out that the KC-135 cockpit is too small so had to completely build it from sheet and I robbed some of the KC-135 cockpit parts. I think it turned out pretty good not that you will see all of it but it will look ok thru the glass. Found 3 good figures for the flight crew. Repositioned some of there hands and legs so they will fit. Next will be to paint the interior and get ready to close it up.

GB, I plan on spraying alternating white and black stripes and then going over that will Alclad Polished Aluminum. I am looking for a subtle shade difference with the white and black undercoats. Enjoy Erick

Erick,

Very nice re-work of the bulk hold and cockpit. Are you going to drape glue-soaked tissue over that lattice you have on either side of the opening to simulate the baggage screens?

Is that cockpit going to fit in the resin nose, or are you just going to use the KMC front end?

Hey Mike, yes I am, probably will put a figure in there too, I still am leaning towards the kit nose I just don't see that there is to much of a problem, I am not that much of a rivet counter but I have the nose on order and have another KMC 727 that I won on Ebay and will see on that one. Thanks Erick

Mate, that is lovely. I have the kit with ANSETT Australia decals, the same aircraft I remember flying on as a kid with my mum. Now, if you could drop some of those extras you are doing in some rubber, that would be fantastic. I can't find anything accessory wise for a 1/72 airliner. Great work! I might go and have another look at mine in the box!

Cheers, Chris
