Thanks Moritz. I never noticed the lighting until you said something. Those two were taken during the early eaving, around 7PM local. The first three were taken around 6AM local. There was a lot of dust in the air that day, as you can tell.

Whats the noticible difference/s between the Il-76 & the -78?

Transport (Il-76) vs. Tanker.(Il-78) Here you go:

This photo does a great job of showing the refueling pods and probes of the Il-78:

You can't quite see them in domvickerys post showing the India AF Il-78MKI, but the Indians use Israeli refueling pods in place of the Russian UPAZ pod.

The Russian pod has a square cross section, the Israeli pod is more rounded......

Another question, whats the model difference between the Candids that have the rear turret & the ones that dont? Are there any other external differences between the 2?

Ves :bandhead2:

The whole area of Il-76 designations is a bit of a minefield - as is true for most Russian aircraft!!!

Basically, there is the Il-76M (modified/upgraded) and Il-76MD (Dalniy/long range) - these are the miltary variants with tail turrets.

Then there is the Il-76T (transport) and Il-76TD (Transport Dalniy) - this is the purpose-built civil version - with a neat fairing in place of the tail turret.

But - there are lots of ex-miltary Il-76s out there - that have various styles of faired-in tails, ranging from just painted over windows to complete conical replacements.

The designation written on the front fuselage doesn't help much either - there are Il-76TDs with tail turrets and Il-76MDs without.....

I can recommend Aerofaxs book(let) on the Il-76 - it's all explained in there....

Thx Ken, I should've expected nothing less from those pesky Russians. . . always trying to keep us western modellers confused!
