Accurate Miniatures SBD-3 Dauntless

Recommended Posts

This is one of the greatest kits I've ever built. I built this pretty much straight OOB, as it requires almost nothing else to look good. The markings are pieced together to represent an SBD-3 from VS-6, aboard the Yorktown at the battle of Midway. There si one small historical error, but I'm not too worried about it, and I'm not going to say what it is! I made the antenna from 6x fly fishing tippet. The finish is Polly Scale, with an artist's oil wash, some pre- and post shading as well as some pastels, and Prismacolor pencil for the small amount of chipping.

What paint did you use for the camo?

Scott: I used Polly Scale Intermedite Blue 80% and Lt. Gull Gray 20% to get the blue/gray color.

That's a great looking SBD! Very very nice. Are you gonna paint the rigging wire?

Jerry

Jerry: It's smoke colored and deosn't look too bad in person, it's just reflecting a lot of light in the photos.

Thanks very much everyone. Much appreciated.

Great looking Dauntless!

Hey gang, I think this build needs a name change. I propose it be called a SBD DauntMORE because there is clearly nothing "less" about this build. It sure is a beauty. You captured the look and feel and the paint job is a real knockout.
