Question for the F/A-18 guys

Recommended Posts

Hello all

I've got the Twobobs sheet for the 2004 "Blue Tailed" CAG bird from VFA-131 and I just want to confirm what all it needs. I'll be using the 1/32 Academy kit as a base. If I read Dave Roof's pinned subject right, BuNo 16527 should have:

Late pit

SJU-17

Dual chaff/flare buckets

GPS dome

IFF bird slicers

Did I miss anything (or add anything that should not be on there)? Thank's for the help guys!

Aaron

I'm not strikeeagle801, but I can answer your question with a "yes." Orion Decals sheet 48016 provided decals for Kuwaiti F/A-18Cs and Ds. I know Dave Roof (easy to find here on ARC and he is Orion Decals) was trying to get rid of the last of his stock of these sheets a year or so ago, so I don't know if he has any left, but they are great looking decals. And they were one of the first sheets that I am aware of that came with the ejection seat stencils. (the main reason I picked up the sheet actually)

This is the jet I'm doing with my Academy Hornet also. I have the Black Box late cockpit and the F-4Dable chaff dispensers which are great. No reference pics I have show IFF bird slicers on this plane.

Hey strikeeagle801, I have a question. Do you know if there are any 1/48 Kuwaiti Air Force decal set for F/A-18C Hornet?

I had a sheet at one time. I'll look in the morning and see if I still do. I might have just kept the stencils and threw away the other parts of it. If I have the sheet, I'll be glad to send it to you, if not, you'll have to talk to Dave like the other guys have said.

. No reference pics I have show IFF bird slicers on this plane.

I had not really begun to get photo refs yet, so thank you for the heads-up. Can anyone confirm whether or not this airframe does have them? Based on the BuNo and Dave's list, it should have gotten them as an upgrade.

I have the Black Box late cockpit

I'm looking into this as well. I have the OIF boxing, and was wondering if the pit is for the early or later blocks. Also, does anyone know what the CE pit is like? I've seen one on Evilbay that so far has not hit astronomical prices. Of course now that I've said that, it probably will.

Check out Airliners.net for lots of great pics of this bird. Just do a search on 'VFA-131'.

Think there might also be a variation on this scheme from the Twobobs sheet. I think I remember some pics with a slightly different inner-tale design. Presume it's the same bird at a differnt point in time.

For the scheme Twobobs gives, it does NOT have bird slicers. VFA-131's my fave Hornet squadron and I've got a dozen pics found online of the blue-tail one. The slightly later version of the scheme also doesn't have them. It may NOW have them, but it no longer wears blue tails (assuming the latest CAG is the same airframe). (Grey tails now, much like their 95/96 scheme)

Just did a side-by-side comparison of the CE and BB cockpits. The CE initially looks slightly better cast and crisper. But looking closer, the details look more realistic on the Black Box. Just a lot more airplane-like. The seat is much better too as is overal quantity of detail. I think some of the crispness of the CE set comes from the fact that some the detail is just more simplified than in the BB cockpit.

Overall, for accuracy and detail I'd say go with the Black Box.
