Hey all,

Well, I've talked about it since December and it finally happened. Trigger designed us a new paint scheme. 89-0211 is now wearing it. The rest of the battalion will soon follow. I sent 7 hours out in the sun today working on this, and I think we did Grant's vision proud.

Here's the profile he did:

And here's 211 as she sits now...

I'll post more when the whole scheme's finished.

Thank you all.

Jon called me up a few months back, asking if I wanted to take a crack at designing a shark's mouth for his unit's AH-64As. I said sure, but when I was researching shark's mouths on Apaches (I didn't want to accidentally be close to another unit's markings because what's the point of individualized markings if they look like someone else's?), I realized that a shark's mouth may not have been the best solution. Shark mouths work fine on tactical fighters... both are gray, smooth and have to keep moving forward to operate. But an Apache is green, covered in bumps, rivets, very nimble, can hover in place and still be lethal...it's more akin to a dragon than a fish. So, that's what I drew. So far the responses that I've heard from those involved in PA have been positive

Sorta. I'm in Tennessee, working with a side view drawing, and this is taking place somewhere in PA. So I'm off-site and have no access to the real thing. Since Jon's up there for AT, we don't get much of an opportunity to talk and these are the first pix I'm seeing as well. Because Jon has access and far better knowledge of the Apache, he would know more about that than me.

That's looking really  . As has been said it fits the airframe perfectly, not only in concept, but in visually bringing the creature out from the airframe. You done good, Trigger :woot.gif:

:)

Regardless, it looks pretty mean as-is. Excellent work.

Alligators in PA?

Uh oh....

Sure, why not? Gators live in the sewers of New York City. I read about it on the internet so it must be true! :)

As for decals, I honestly don't know what's happening on this front. They haven't finished painting the first aircraft yet.

Jeez, Jon, ever think about changing to the LARGE needle & nozzle for your airbrush???? :)

Jeeze, maybe he forgot to pack his airbrush and had to hand paint that? Hubrol, Tamiya or ModelMaster?

That is a mighty fine looking idea both in concept and execution there. Sharp.

Hey guys,

Things are going well here in central VA. Response has been very positive to the markings so far. Mike, Grant and I talked about using the gear mount for the eyes, but the masking would be a nightmare and the look wouldn't be the same. The eye right now is just the outline. Details will be added hopefully tomorrow if the weather cooperates. Today was awful, but I did get to put 340 rounds of 30mm and 38 rockets downrange, so it wasn't a total loss.

As for how it is being done, I wish I had my airbrush here. We're using Wal Mart spray cans. Krylon camo colors, and gloss red. That's about it.

Wednesday is going to be our maintenance day, so I'm pretty sure we'll be able to get all of them finished up by then.

Take care!

Jon
