ipms33206
Here is the link to Tower Hobbies. It is the 1/48 Monogram kit. http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti00...=LXTAS2&P=K Trumpeter is supposed to releasea 1/48 C-47 this year too. But it has some shape issues. Dave Williams
Cool! I believe that the aircraft shown on the box art had the late MXU-470 minigun modules. If that's true, you may not get "Puff" markings, since I think she only had the SUU-11 miniguns. For the AC-47s, what type of guns are included somewhat dictate what markings can be used. For decals, Superscale made a OOP and hard to find sheet for Vietnam gunships, which included the original "Puff". Hopefully with this kit out, someone will make an aftermarket sheet. Good to see that, according to the description, they include the later props. If they only included the MXU-470s, I may pick up a second one to use with the CE conversion, which has SUU-11s. Dave Williams
woops dave! double post!does no one else make SUU-11s? i think id only get this kit if i could do "puff" Richard There might be SUU-11s in kits like the A-37, but I think all the ones I've seen in kits have the full aerodynamic fairings around the front that completely cover the gun and barrels. These were usually removed on the AC-47s, so you would have to cut off the front and scratch the entire gun assembly. This shows what the SUU-11 looks like, with and without fairings. The rear fairing was left on in the AC-47 http://www.airwar.ru/weapon/guns/suu-11.html Aside from the gun, you'd have to build the mounts. I believe that Puff started with the original mounts, which were an open frame box with the gun hanging in the center of the box. I think she eventually got the later, more common mounts, where the minigun pod sat on a pair of cradles on top of the mount (this is what is in the CE set). The Superscale sheet had markings for Puff in the original scheme with the white top and NMF undersides, but I think most of the markings were still reusable after Puff was repainted in SEA camo. The aircraft shown on the kit box art appears to be this one. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7...-udon-jun70.jpg
FlyingSnowmew
Is this is a new kit, or just a repop of their one from the 70s?
F4DPhantomII
I want one.It is probably the older 1/48 kit with additional parts to make an AC-47. saves a conversion.
RCoulter52
Is this is a new kit, or just a repop of their one from the 70s? Yes it is but, there ain't a darn thing wrong with the old girl! According to my calculations, and what Trumpeter's stated suggested retail for theirs, I can buy 6 of these to one of the Trumpeter kits! I'll take the Revellogram kit any day!! Off to place my order for a couple!!
Dave Williams
I'm just wondering how well the Trumpeter kit will sell now, especially in the US. How many people are going to shell out over $100, when they can get the same thing (albeit with rasied panel lines) for around $20. To be fair, perhaps Trumpeter didn't know that Revell was going to reissue the Monogram kit when they decided to make theirs and it may just be a case of bad luck. One thing I'm wondering on the repop is whether they modified the fuselage mold to add a gun port for the last gun. Unlike the common SUU-11 installations, the rear MXU-470 didn't fire through the cargo door area. They cut a new square hole in the side (it wasn't a window) just in front of the door. You can see the difference here: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7...-udon-jun70.jpg http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/comm...of_the_door.jpg If they made a hole, it would have to be filled for a C-47 Edited May 18, 2008 by Dave Williams
Firecaptain
FINALLY a US company's marketing department wasn't asleep at the switch and scooped the competition! Edited May 18, 2008 by Firecaptain
Daryl J.
There's a copy coming in from e-Hobbyland to Ye Olde Householde. The C-47 was the last large Monogram kit built right before I put model building away in the 1980's. Having the gunship version seems like *finally*!!! Daryl J. thom
Trumpeter is supposed to releasea 1/48 C-47 this year too. But it has some shape issues. Have you got some release sprues then? I'd love to see a proper comparison if you have one, so we know what's coming from Trumpeter. Edited May 19, 2008 by thom

thom
Test shots herehttp://www.ipmsphilippines.com/v2/index.ph...43&Itemid=1 Stephen Does anyone know if there are some more recent shots than these? I remember the flak Trumpeter took at the time and I thought they might have done a nifty re-tool since. The release date seems to keep slipping, which might suggest they're making changes. vimana
I would really love to do an AC-47, but I don't want one that looks just like everyone else's. Maybe a foreign one? I wonder where I could find South Vietnamese, Cambodian or Laotian decals to fit. Maybe one of the aftermarket companies will step up and print some. But even finding photos of AC-47s in the markings of those air forces won't be easy.
polybebber
Just received a shipping notification from Tower Hobbies that my AC-47s were shipped yesterday ;) . First of all this is excellent and fast service from Tower Hobbies considering I've placed my first order with them on Saturday, secondly, considering the affordable price ( that includes shipping overseas) I don't care too much about Trumpeter releasing a C-47 with recessed panel lines for much more money. I'm not too crazy about Trumpeter's engineering anyway, and most important to me, I've seen so many excellent models built from the old Revellogram kits. I'm quite happy with my decision to go for the reissued Revell kit and not wait for Trumpies release. Lothar
Dave Williams
Mine's on the way too. It should be here Thursday afternoon according to the UPS tracker.
thom
Another slight sidetrack on this topic, but bear with me, I think it's got legs... Was at a model show a while back (don't remember which) and there was an airline model stand, and all the builds were as smooth as anything. And you know what? They all looked really realistic. With that in mind, what do you lot think about building the Revell kit up but simply sanding off the raised lines and not rescribing them? After all, it's not as though panel lines on real aircraft are a like trenches. I understand the argument about scale appearance and everything, but I can't help feeling in this case more than many others that the smooth finish would be more realistic than scribed lines (a la Trumpeter). Dave Williams
I think the main hardspot for raised panel lines vs recessed isn't so much accuracy, but how to deal with the repair work after filling seams. Raised lines are harder to restore and if you don't do it, you end up with blank spots in the surface detail where the seams were filled. Recessed lines are much easier to restore. Another issue on airliners is that they are usually smaller scale (1/144 or 1/200), so not having panel lines in that small a scale is less noticeable than not having them in 1/48. In fact, almost any panel line in 1/144 or smaller would be vastly overscale. Edited May 20, 2008 by Dave Williams
LemonJello
Well, I'll just have to keep on the lookout for one of these. It will make a great addition to my growing stockpile of gunships. Cool.
jrallman
One of the guys in my model club uses stretched sprue to repair raised panel lines lost to sanding and the result is quite nice.
