Building an A-7E (from the 70's)

Recommended Posts

Ok... so who are the true SLUF nuts around here? I'm about to start my new project a VA-25 A-7E from around 1975 or so... so a nice colorful bird with the green tail. Got the Hasegawa A-7E, and the Superscale decals just arrived ... I'm all set to start.

At any rate, I'm having a hard time finding good reference pics on the web...

Can any of you with a nice collection of photos give me a shout? I really need some help on this one.

Thanks.

-Greg

Here's a few from when the entire squadron stopped off at Sheppard AFB one Saturday.

For some reason they had to fly in the middle of a squadron paint job. This is the only time I have ever seen this happen.

Hello All,

Does anyone know the shade of green that VA-25 was using during this time?  My A-7 is nearing the top of my build queue and want to get a head start on gathering the paint.

Any help you can provide will be much appreciated.

Regards,

John

The Italeri boxing has these markings listing  flat green FS34151 for the tail. I can’t validate that for you however.

Hmm. 34151 is Interior Green, nothing like the photos posted here and elsewhere -- much more yellow in it. To me the color looks a lot closer to Euro Green 34092, which has much more blue content.

Thank you, Ikar, for posting those photos. At the risk of hijacking the thread, they may well clear up some indecision I've been having about the white used in the Gull Gray/White scheme: Specs called for Insignia White FS 17875, which is a decidedly warm, creamy shade. My concern was that it would clash with the purer white found in virtually all decals. Looking at the side view that Ikar posted reveals a pretty obvious difference between the underside white and the white in the star-and-bar. I'm guessing the latter is in fact a decal printed with "pure" white. The rudder also appears to be a different shade from the underside, closer to the star-and-bar. Don't really know how to explain that, nor what it might imply about the other topside control surfaces.

Hasegawa boxed this scheme and the color callout for the green seems be Gunze 66 (Bright Green):

Gunze 66 at first seems too bright but then maybe not:

I suppose it depends on the lighting....

Thanks for the advice fellas. I ordered a Mr. Hobby C066 to see how it looks, but the color sheet makes it look too light. FS 34151 in the AK Real Colors is Light Green, which seems sorta close. I have that color, so I was able to verify.  From the photos, it seems like this paint type oxidized fairly quickly, so there is a range of green shade that will work.  I have a feeling that when the time comes to paint the vertical stabilizer, I will have have to mix a few shades to find something that I like.
