Can someone identify two concept aircraft?

Recommended Posts

hi folks,

I just found this concept-deck-layout drawing of CVN-78, USS Gerald R. Ford

cvn212.jpg

The line up shows single and double Super Hornets, F-35s, Awacs and two seahawks, i know, but...

what are those other two types of stealthy birds ?

one bigger, with foldable wings, the other smaller, almost drone like...

also note the three whatever-craft between the hornet and awacs in bottom left corner!

maybe cranes ??? I am lost here, any ideas?

cheers!

p.s. forget about the webpage/author itself - scum - but this image is exciting

Not to take this too far off topic but does anyone else have a problem with the Navy selection of names for it's aircraft carriers? I personally thought the old names (America, Enterprise, Hornet, etc) carried some real significance. Now we get the Stennis, the Ford, etc, etc. To me, it's just a pathetic suck up by the Navy to keep folks in Congress smiling. If anyone can tell me why either of these mediocre (at best) politicians is worthy of having an aircraft carrier named after him, I'm all ears.

Maybe the USAF should rename the JSF the "F-35 Pelosi"? The Army could rename the Apache as the "AH-64 Barney Frank". It might get congress to kick a few billion more into the programs. Looks like it works for the Navy, they get all the funding they ask for.

Sorry again, I just couldn't resist it.

The tradition of naming carriers after people started with the USS JFK. They were named after Presidents or people who were either in or supported the Navy. Personally, I'd like to see James Madison or a Thomas Jefferson. That would be kind of historically neat. In regards to Gerald Ford, he actually wasn't as mediocre of a President as you might imagine. He was straddled in a no-win situation. He was actually very well respected by both sides of the aisle. Given a different set of circumstances, he may have made a very capable President.

That must be why I've spent the last six years with admirals telling me I don't actually NEED flight hours to be proficient and ought to be perfectly happy with twenty year old simulators.

I agree completely. The navy used to have a fine tradition of naming capitol ships after battles or ships of the revolutionary war. This is where you get the great names like Saratoga, Lexington and Enterprise. Unfortunately, these types of names have been relegated to cruisers as of late. The navy has thrown its great tradition out the window out of favour to political parties. It started with the U.S.S. Franklin D. Roosevelt, because he died in office and was a very popular president. It then spread to the Forrestal because, as Secretary of the Navy, he was a staunch advocate of carrier aviation, and his career, and death, involved a lot of controversial and mysterious elements. (Which we won't hash out here.) Then Kennedy died in office, etc.. etc...

The only naming that ever bothered me was the naming of the U.S.S. Ronald Reagan, because he was still alive when the congress, and even many state governments, started naming all sorts of stuff after him. I always thought you had to pass away in the line of duty (While still holding office.) or serve in the Navy, heroically, in order to be considered for such an honour. Now, any former President is entitled to the honour, even one that can't get re-elected.

Personally, I'd like to see the Navy return to its great tradition of using the old, faithful names. They were great ships and their names should be carried on for generations out of respect to our nation's, and our navy's, history.

P.S. Let me add one more thing. IBTL. You know someone's gonna go bonkers "defending" their favourite politician and you know this thread is going down. :)

They took away your flight hours so they could spend the money on more carriers to name after more politicians, in order to get more money for carriers. Get it?

USS Arnold Schwarzenegger

I recall back in (20)'60 on "Big Arnie" we had UCAVs launching and trapping 24/7. Some goofyfella named Conning, Croner, Conner -- something like that -- kept jabbering on about foreshadowing ...

I remember talk about naming a carrier after Alan Shepard, but the Navy named a supply ship instead. Can anyone confirm this?

I'm sorry, I'm from Michigan and I don't think Ford deserved a carrier named after him. At least not a new, concept ship. Maybe one later in the class.

Think of it, the first carrier of a new class named for the first American in space who was a naval aviator. Far more appropriate than Ford.

Mike H, you are correct. The Navy (in it infinite wisdom) decided to honor such a great American hero like Al Sheppard by naming a cargo ship after him. Personally I want to *removed* the brilliant S0b who made that call . . .

Ves

Actually try again. The first aircraft carrier was named after a person not a place. CV-1 was named Samuel Pierpont Langley a scientist and early experimenter with manned aircraft.

Wouldn't they be worried that a ship named after Ford might keep going aground?

Out of curiosity, what was the Enterprise named after?

If Obama becomes president, will we have to change form Hail to the Chief to Handel's Missiah?

I think I'll go buy a pitchfork and torch for my armory.
