I've started last week, and I think this build will take a tad longer than the Tornado, which only took 11 days. The paintjob will be a lot easier, but I have a few more detail stuff and a little adjustment to the kit parts.

MAW decals, F-4Dable models chaff&flare dispenser and GPS antenna, MK-1 exhaust nozzles, Aires wheel bays, BB Naces seats( I know the pic shows quick boost seats, but I needed naces so I ordered the black box seats, so if annyone needs the quick boosts, let me know), and I have eduard mesh screens and placards on the way.

I'm going to build it on landing approach, I just don't know yet what I'm going to do with the base: landing strip or carrier deck.

The progress so far:

With the BB seats:

I extended the landing gear and added some tubing and wiring.

My guide:

I discovered a little book shop nearby that has an astounding collection of hundreds of thousands of aviation books, including every daco book. needless to say I got out a lot lighter.

Since it is VERY rare to see a VMFA(AW) -D at the boat...go with the "landings strip". I'd also recommend a fine later of sand across it too.

I didn't know that, I used to think every carrier had a Marines squadron on board.

Those landing gears and the fore bay look very impressive!

I suspect it would be one more outstanding build we'll see one day in the critique coner. :woot.gif:

Nice progress here, go ahead, mate!

Cheers!

Alexander.

Little question about the loadout: when off the boat, does the ordnance have the fire protective coating?

There are always exceptions to the rule, but about 90% of the Mk 80 series bombs you will see on Marine "D's" will have the ablative coating, and all the BLU series. If you see any non-thermally protected bombs, they are usually Mk 83s or 84s, and pretty old. If you are planning on modelling a Hawks jet from their most recent OIF deployment, a typical loadout would have been:

St.1 AIM-9

St.2 AGM-65

St.3 Drop Tank

St.4 Empty

St.5 Litening Pod

St.6 Empty

St.7 Drop Tank

St.8 GBU-38 JDAM OR CVER w/two GBU-12s

St.9 AIM-9

I was with VMFA(AW)-332 in Al Asad, and -533 relieved us over there, their loadouts would have been very similar if not identical to our loads.

Hope this helps!

Was that asymetrical placement of the tanks standard? I can't find any pics of that.

And would these be acceptable:

St.5 Drop Tank

St.6 AIM-120

St.7 Drop Tank

from what i see they would both be acceptable (i'm not an ordie though) but your second option would not be probable. asymetrical loads were pretty much standard. it allowed the AN/AAS-38 to have a better feild of view.

here are a couple of build references

Andy's gallery page

Andy's build thread

if what i'm doing works i'll be posting a link to one of the hawks videos from the DVD.

Progress is a little slow, the cockpit just doesn't seem to want to get painted. I've redone it 3 times, but it never came out good enough, so I've ordered the eduard interior set. Now I'm waiting on that, the mesh set and placards to continue.

This is what I've done so far:

100_2099.JPG

100_2100.JPG

The seam sanded away and polished:

100_2101.JPG

I've been experimenting to try to duplicate the fire resistant coating, and this is what I came up with:

100_2102.JPG

Spray glue from tessa and a coat of mr surfacer 1000

And again, a little update:

100_2104.JPG

The seats and gear still need the placards.

These gave me a big headache:

100_2105.JPG

When I finally got them in place and glued the fuselage together, I forgot to check the possition of the intakes... I got them in place and aligned, but it's going to take a lot of putty and sanding to get things smooth, inside and outside.

I've also started with the base:

This is supposed to look like the plane is flying over the runway, with the squadron patch on it. Does this look convincing or should I go back to the drawing board?
