What's the best mix for toned-down black paint?

Recommended Posts

Hey everybody,

For some reason an all-black model doesn't look right to me. Probably it's because it's just so...black. I've heard mixing black paint with brown paint, and/or black with grey. What do you suggest?

Vallejo make a black grey, which is similar to cockpit black being a very very dark grey, almost black.

I was told today the Tamiya are relaseing a new colour called Nato black, which is essentially a very day, almost black, grey.

Not sure about black cockpits (never had one) but for tyres I use (acrylics) Tamyia flat black with a drop of MM dark drab (brown colour), probably a ratio of about 4:1.

Hi supertom

I use a paint from Revell (no. 9) called Anthracite (RAL7021) It is nearly black, but has a little grayish and blueish look. I use it on tires, black cockpits and many other parts.

Best regards

Gretar Bill
