David Walker
The A-12's nose is basically 'more pointy' ... Whoa, whoa, whoa! Now you're getting way too technical. :)
GreyGhost
Whoa, whoa, whoa! Now you're getting way too technical. Hey, I've heard engineer types use the same exact term so it must be technical ... Gregg
jcfay
Mark - thanks, that does help clear up my confusion, at least. Jon
Flyboyf18
Anybody know if the Revell -71 is from Hasegawa or Italeri? Thanks
Cobrahistorian
Mark, Great comparison! I'm wondering, though. A-12 60-6925 at the Intrepid has the fairing in front of the windscreen like the SR-71s. Is that a late mod, or was it just stuck on there after it was retired? MiG31
I posited this in the builders' thread, but I thought I'd inquire here. Does anyone know any details concerning changes to the SR-71 RSO station? The most common configuration I've seen is this one: Another is depicted in various kits, which have an elliptical-shaped display in place of the top rectangular one. Any idea if this was a change to the whole fleet, and if so, when was it implemented?

Is that a late mod, or was it just stuck on there after it was retired? Jon From what I've read, the fairing was fitted to all active Blackbirds; had to do with friction heating IIRC. The one in the picture I posted doesn't have the fairing as it is serial# 60-6924, the first A-12, and was never used operationally. HTH :D
Aggressor Supporter
Enjoy seeing all of these Blackbird pics and the post by mkimages is very informative.

For that matter, are there any good photos showing the earlier configuration?
yardbird78
That oval display screen for the RSO was a guess by the model manufacter and it wasn't particularly accurate. Darwin
MiG31
Do you have any photos showing the panel as it was configured for that period?

richter111
That is one worn finish one that bird, I bet that would be a bear to replicate...
BAM'n'IVM
I wouldn't try - it's inaccurate, too, from what I've read. Just standard black paint instead of the Blackbird's special formula and color. To stand up better to the Texas sun.
mhoupt
Should see the paint scheme on the bird at the museum in Eglin - Gloss Black. When I was there a few years ago it was pealing and needed a new coat. Mark
richter111
Yeah that bird is not very well maintained. But storing it outside in the hot FLA sun is quite a challenge. In fact most of the birds in their part were in need of upkeep. The RB-47 looked particularly rough I was last there in 2001 Ric
BAM'n'IVM
Might be the same gloss black as the Lackland bird. Lackland maintains their display aircraft pretty impressively.
fasteagle12
The Kalamazoo Air Zoo has the only SR-71B. A nice looking Bird. Here's a link: http://www.airzoo.org/aircraft/sr71-blackbird/

Larry Really, house paints? There is a museum here in Illinois that paints theirs with water tower paints specially mixed to match the colors needed. It seems to hold up rather well. Wonder what they will do when they need to repaint their TPS based Tomcat? Mark
