F-15E "Southern Outlaw" 336thFS, 4FW, Tamiya 1/32

Here's a little update on my "E". Progress is quite slow, but then that's how things are if you have an 8-month old about, plus the nice outdoor temptations of living in North Carolina.

First off, the exhausts are on. I think I still need to smear the black pastel a little more in the divergent section, things don't look "streaky" enough over there.

I added the little red handles that seem to show quite clearly on the side-fuselarge mounted pylons. The HobbyDecal dry transfers also worked quite nice on the pylons.

Here's an overall shot. Guy, I followed your advice and reduced the size of the red inside wing lights a little. Thx for the hint!

With regards the finish, I usually use good old Testors Flat Coat for the final coat, wait for that to dry for at least 24h, then rub the whole aircraft down with kitchen paper. This is one of my favorite parts to building the model, since is really makes the model come alive. The granular finish of the flat coat is reduced (needs to be to account for scale effect) and some sheen is re-introduced. Real aircraft never seem to be completely flat once they have been in service for a little while.

And last, here are some pics of the undercarriage. Some things are still missing, such as the doors and the oscillation damper (scratchbuilt) on the front leg. Also still need to apply some light grey pastel to the tread pattern of the tires. Somthing else worth pointing out are the data Eduard photo-etch plates on the underside of the pylons (from the spares box).

Thx guys! ... Pharty, I think there are other 1/42 F-15E benchmarks around here, have you seen Guy's ridiculously good-looking build? Panos, Jeff, Jack, thx for the encouragement.

I thought I'd through my tentative interim steps toward building Mk82s with FMU113 fuses--the bombs are from CAM, the fuses are the more novel aspect, they are scratchbuilt. What do you guys think? The Eagle will have a mixed load I came across on www.f-15estrikeeagle.com.

Here's a weapons update. First off, some Mk82's with FMU-113 proximity fuses, the fuses are scratchbuilt. The bombs themselves are from CAM. I went to town trying to give them a beaten look, including some rust streaks. Also, since my E is from early OIF, I thought some bomb graffiti would be appropriate.

Here are the GBU-12's. They are missing the seeker heads (long story but Harold is coming to the rescue). The bomb bodies are from an Academy F-18, the rest of what you see is from an Aussie resin set. More graffiti on these. I took my cues for the graffiti from a range of close-up pics of bomb graffiti.

Here is the single GBU-10. Serious rust on this one.

AIM-120's. I love these sets, they are the Cutting Edge rendition. Decals are from Two Bobs.

AIM-9's. decals are from Two Bobs. I only weaher missiles very lightly, they usually look relatively clean.

Superb job on the ordnance Marcel :monkeydance:

The extra effort really shows, the rusty, beaten up appearance looks very convincing.

You've done a good job of lining up the two halves of the AIM-120s too. I struggled to get the front and back to meet neatly, kudos for that. (I don't know if it bothers you but the motor detail on the -120 is molded wrongly though. It should be an inverted cone shape in a mottled red/brown colour.)

Great work! :touche:

:boohoo:

Thx Guy... isn't it a shame that those Cutting Edge missilies are out of production. I used Academy Aim-9 control surfaces and although they are relatively thin, they still look a little grotesque next to the Cutting Edge Aim-120. I thought about thinning the Aim-9 wings down but wondered how I'd ever get 8x consistently thinned wings.

Thx for the comments!

great detailing job, i live the bomb messages, looks realistic

a question...how you use to paint the HUD?

cheers

I used irredescant film that I stumbled across in the shape of a gift wrapping bow at CVS pharmacy. Previously, I had ordered all kinds of confetti online in the hope of getting something that looks the part, but never had any luck until the CVS visit. Shows how lucky a guy can get while on the hunt for baby diapers.

Ken, Agressor, thx for the encouragement!

I'm getting pretty close now, here are some more updates. First off the cockpit...

I used lead foil to cover the backrest,by introducing some random creases, it made the two seats not look exactly like each other.

Here is the finished main undercarriage. Nothing too special here.

Only stores that are missing are the LGBs...

That looks great, Marcel! I don't know how I've missed this thread before now.

Jake

Thx Jake... your book is a very integral part of this build, just five minutes ago it saved me from painting the canopy actuator in the Tamiya-advised color :worship:
