1/72 Esci RAAF C-130E (re-build)

Recommended Posts

Thanks guys for your comments. I prefer to work with enamels so that is what I have had to remove. The panel lines have been rescribed as best I could and I have re-attached the wings. I just have to sand down the putty on the wing joins and where I slipped with the scriber but all in all it is just about ready to receive its fresh paint job. Hoping to finish her before I go back to work at the end of next week. Is where I currently stand.

Well it was all ready for the paint shop and you wouldn't believe it, I grabbed it by the wing root to turn it over to check if I'd missed anything when all of a sudden I hear this cracking sound from the top-side. I return it to the right side up and low and behold the fuselage has split down the middle and I have now had to re-glue and putty her up. She's now almost ready again for the paint shop. Just got to get rid of a small step in the join.

I thought I'd got rid of the step in the join but not as well as I thought. There's still a slight step there but the decals and gloss coat may remove this problem. I have however, managed to paint the white upper and camo grey walkway as can be seen in the attached pics. Tomorrow, I hope to have the bottom painted in the light ghost grey and then the natural metal leading edges on the wings the day after. The end is in sight but there's four pages of decals to add yet.

Keep up the good work Andrew - it's looking good. I remember the pain of masking those walkways on my RAF Herc.

Offer of decals is still there - if you need them.

Cheers, Tim

Cheers Tim for the comments. I'm right now on the decal front. I have now painted the grey bottom, repaired the props and returned the fuselage to standing on its wheels. I'm hoping in the next couple of days to have the NMF added to the wings and straighten up the bands on the prop tips.

You are right Ray about the earlier scheme. From what I can tell between 1967 and about 1978 they had NMF leading edges and the squadron logo on the tail and then they removed the logo and painted the leading edges to protect them from corrosion (like yours). As you'd already finished your '77' in that scheme I thought I'd do the earlier one as I had originally done. Pics later.

I was fortunate enough to get a day off work yesterday, so after completing a bit of a tidy up around the house I sat down and fixed that step on the fuselage seem before finishing the major painting. last night when it was dry I started to add the decals. It is now looking like the real thing. I will take some photos tonight or this afternoon and add them to this post, so stay tuned.

Regards.

Well here's the pics of the work so far.

N/B-If you ever buy these decals, the squadron badge comes on a square white background. The logo needs to be cut away from this background as they were never on a square white background.

WOW! Looks great Andrew!

:crying2:

You should see it now! I started at 8.00 p.m. and stayed up until just after midnight decalling and still haven't quite finished it but jeez it looks good now. Just have to do the left over stencilling (1 hours worth) then it's doors back on and final touch ups before weathering and she's done. Should be finished by Monday night I hope.

Cheers  for the comments

I've just finished touching up bits and pieces and returning the U/C doors, front door and ramp to their respective places and finished the decalling. Now it's time for a gloss coat to seal everything before doing the panel lines and a little weathering. Tomorrow, as it's another day.

Andrew

Kudos, Andrew - she looks great! :)

One of these days I'll finish the Italeri E model that's been moldering partially assembled in my box of doom for 20 years. Watching this thread had given me some inspiration!

Thanks Ben and Kev for your comments. I'm just glad I was able to re-build her without any real dramas. Ben, the Italeri kit comes up well. Trojan Thunder (Ray) has done one and it looks great. Seek his advice to faults or build issues if need be. I'm sure he'd be only too happy to help out.

Regards

Andrew
