tiger331
Hi all, mostly all is truth. But really it depends on the exact helicopter. I.e. - first Czechoslovak Mi-17s (f.n. 0801 till 0850) were equipped with small fuel tanks like old Mi-8Ts. Later had some of them replaced these tanks by bigger ones (like Mi-8P/PPA/9) with four strips and finally some of them with even bigger with four strips but more bulged... And of course were equipped by chaff/flares dispensers, cockpit armour, and some other details. You must be careful and have pictures of the example which you want to model, because, as we say here - every Russian helicopter is a prototype!!! (for example you can not easily take i.e. doors from one and fit it directly to the other - it always needs some "honing"...

They are on my website at :- http://www.flankers-site.co.uk/modl_mi-8_kits.html Please feel free to add comments/corrections/better photos here. Cheers Ken
Jennings
What I'm learning is, as with C-47s and a few other types, there are almost no two Mi-8s alike. Things that have been pointed out as belonging to this or that variant or sub-variant are often seen on other (sometimes earlier, sometimes later) variants. An example is the RH side fwd window emergency escape hatch. I suspect it may have been retrofitted to some early Mi-8Ts. Some later Mi-8MTs (Mi-17s) lack the two accumulator panels just behind the RH side pilot's sliding window, while some have them (as on Mi-8Ts). Some Mi-8MTs have a single large electrical connection panel under the LH pilot's sliding window, while some have the earlier Mi-8T dual plug type. Those are just a few examples. Doppler boxes (or the total lack thereof) are not a key either, as some have them and some don't. Don't you just love this stuff?? J

Mutt
Finally, the tail rotor was moved from starboard to port, switching from a tractor to a pusher – increasing the tail rotor authority dramatically. Ken, With all due respect to the expert, the Hip was one of the rare occasions where the move was made from pusher to tractor. Per the Mil website: A new anti-torque rotor rotatÂing in the opposite direction was to be installed; this meant that the rotor would be of a tractor type instead of the previous pusher type. As a result of the changed direction of rotation, the lower blade of the anti-torque rotor was moving against the main rotor down-wash; coupled with the increased chord of the blades, this considerably enhanced yaw control efficiency.
