wally7506
Here's mine. Sgt. Peter Durnford's Spitfire Vb from 111 Sqn. One-eleven squadron was delegated to take part in "Smack" sorties in late 1941. With the help of searchlights, treble ones's Spits would be directed to incoming Luftwaffe bombers. However, the second Blitz never materialized and the Black Spitfires of 111 Sqn saw little action that Winter. However, flying JU-H Sgt. Peter Durnford claimed a 109 probably destroyed on 12 Feb 1942 during a daylight sortie in response to the Channel Dash by the Scharnhorst, Gneiseneau, and Prinz Eugen. (Dr. Alfred Price states that the upper and lower wing roundels were painted over along with the rest of the camo.) This is the Tamiya Vb but with the DH spinner and the Voltage Regulator from the Mk I kit. Also used were the old Cooper Detail exhausts and an Ultracast seat. The decals are mostly from the Victory sheet. I used tungsten wire for the IFF "cheese cutter" wires. In some areas I put some Alclad Aluminum as well the original camo colors down first (Ocean Gray and Dark green ... and even Roundel Dull Red in one spot) and then put tiny bits of wet salt over that. I then painted the entire model with a mix of Floquil (Railroad) Engine Black and Tire Gray (1/1). That gave me an off black that allowed the full black panel wash to stand out a little bit. Once everything was dry I flicked of the dried salt which left a nice paint chipping affect. Comments welcome.
