So basically it's a Chinese rip-off of the Russian Flanker series... wonder if the Russians still think its a good idea to sell advanced hardware to them given that their intellectual property is being abused like this.

Hmm. My exact thoughts.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Besides, that thing is as much a copy of the Su-27 as the Tu-4 was a copy of the B-29. Aside from a passing resemblance in the exterior airframe, none of the systems, avioinics, engines, etc. have a single Russian component in them. And I'm quite certain the airframe is not an exact duplicate either, but probably takes advantage of newer construction materials/techniques than the Flanker.

hello there

Do not the chinese have license to product these flanker?? i thought they had...

bye

They have the license to assemble Flankers from "kits" that are sold by Russia. They absolutely have no license to make own copies of it.

Hmmm … that’s the point and esp. the one the Russian and the Chinese side have different point of views – Maybe Flankerman knows more.

As far as I know – or at least what the Chinese side says – the original contract included the step-by-step decrease of Russian content making at finally a 100% licensed Flanker only made by Chinese parts; for that China paid and not too less … at least for 200 aircraft. Therefore the complete contract was divided into several blocks each with a lover Russian content. The problem now is or was that China requested several updates, like a more powerful radar, several options to improve the multi-role capability and esp. the option to include Chinese designed AAM and ASM. This was partly not done as requested – and as paid – or was to more be expensive than in the original contract.

In the meantime China decided to go a separate way … they added a new multi-role radar (identifiable on the black radome with these “stripesâ€) to support own missiles, changed the cockpit instrumentation + HUD and finally tried to add the WS-10A … which now seems to be at least successful for the Flanker, re-designed several parts – reportedly in the front and rear fuselage with higher composite content and finally refused to use the Russian parts.

So – from the Chinese point of view – why should they incorporate parts which do not equals the original requested and paid specifications, when own parts are maybe cheaper and better ??

IMO the whole Russian outcry is therefore not justified as long as China produces only the contracted and paid for 200 aircraft and don’t export them.

Deino

PS: Besides ... BS means "Version-B - "shuang" Trainer or maybe better twin-seater" indicating a operational role.
