One for D-Day

Recommended Posts

We've got to have a fully-striped aircraft today of all days.

It's the old Monogram Typhoon which I picked up for "peanuts" at a show.

Despite being 40 years old - the date "1969" was moulded inside one of the wings - it's been great fun to build. The level of detail in the box is perfectly acceptable, despite the fact that many parts that would be separate nowadays are either moulded integrally or just omitted. The fit was superb, and would put many newer kits to shame; very little filler was required. The only two complaints I had were that the decal sheet was unusable because it was old, and the plastic was Monogram's "Olive Green" shade; I don't like dark plastic, it makes it difficult to see gaps and flaws in the seams. The former I dealt with by using some ADS decals, and the latter I just had to put up with. Other than the decals, some tape seatbelts and a toothbrush bristle for an aerial, it's completely OOB.

The subject is a Mk Ib of 182 Sqn in July 1944, based at B.160/Kastrup.

Model dedicated to modellers of armour everywhere.

Thanks for the kind words folks.

I think that as well as the subject the simplicity of the kit and a decision not to do a lot of scratch-building of detail* meant that I had a great time building it - nostalgia for modelling as it used to be perhaps?

* There was plenty of scope to improve what was there, but as I said, the level of detail was quite acceptable from the box: engraved instrument panel, cockpit sidewalls and furnishings for example. Basic but perfectly good under a coat of NATO black (more realistic imo than "pure" black) and some dry-brushing in the cockpit.

Thanks again.

A most excellent build of an old yet tried and true model maker, Bring back the original Monogram molds and mold makers. Monogram......I started with them so many years ago, and at one time built that kit, and I think just about every prop kit they did from WWII..and a few of their jets in later years. I will swear by their kits til that nether region down below freezes over.....

Sweet! Has there ever been another Typhoon kit in 1/48?

There has, but considerably more expensive than this one was.

Perhaps I may be tempted one day, in the meantime there are Mustangs I've not modelled yet ...
