F/A-18D in the Tiger scheme worn by a VMFA(AW)-224 Bengals

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

Ambuilding the 1/32 Academy F/A-18D in the Tiger scheme worn by a VMFA(AW)-224 Bengals Hornet (BuNo 164884). It's the grey tiger stripe on standard camo as flown by a Sqn Cmdr. Are there any commercial markings for the tiger stripes, or masks available for this scheme? The kit decals includes just the basic squadron markings. Has anyone any images that would help me mask it myself? Have googled with very limited success, mostly come up with other Bengal aircraft?

Also a big shout out to Greg for supplying me with new instructions/decals in a matter of days! Super guy! :woot.gif:

Cheers

Glen

Hi guys,

Thought I would share what I have so far, as am sure others may be interested? Not much really but here it is:

Here is the caption for the above image from wikipedia:

"Illuminated by the setting sun after landing at Al Asad, Iraq, Jan. 15, a ‘tiger-striped’ F/A-18D Hornet with Marine (All Weather) Fighter Attack Squadron 224 rests in the new hangar area prepared for the squadron by 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing Marines.

A commercially available display model from Liberty Air models:

Have heard it's not always wise to go by another model for accuracy, but the scheme is bang on with the directions in the Academy instructions.

Have found a link to the attack squadrons home page but it wont work for me?

Hope to find more info.

Cheers

Glen

Glen, I don't think there is anything out there to help you. There is a build on ARC where the modeller painted the stripes by hand, the result is nice.

Cheers,

Marcel

Hi Glen

I built this kit recently in the same scheme. I also struggled to find pictures of the actual jet so ended up painting the stripes by hand using just the instructions as a guide. It wasn't as difficult as i thought it was going to be, just work on one area of the plane at a time or confusion may set in. Pictures are in my thread called "my 2009 builds".

Hi Guys,

Thanks for that, will look into the other built example, was thinking hand painting? Airbrush would be smoother but so time consuming? Shame not too much out there on such a nice scheme.

Cheers

Glen
