Making your own decals

Recommended Posts

I have made my own decals with my inkjet printer, but now I need to protect the ink with a clear coat.

I don't want to spend $6 (plus $8 shipping) for a small can of fixative spray from Micro-Mark. I want to try something other than future.

I have heard that a good choice is to use Krylon clear spray ($3-$4). Does this work ok? The directions on the decal paper suggest using this. What's so great about using Krylon clear, besides it dries fast.

Thanks for the help.

I use Testors Decal Bonder to seal custom decals but have used Krylon matte finish spray on models as the final finishing step. No reason it shouldn't work for your decals, especially since it was recommended by the paper maker.

I was thinking about using this decal paper for inkjets also so just a simple question. On regular paper my inkjet runs when it comes in contact with water. So the question is: Does this paper somehow prevent the inks from running when it comes in contact with water or other liquid like Krylon clear spray?

Thanks

That's why you have to seal it with light, misted on coats of the spray while the sheet lies flat on a table. When it's completely dry you can cut the decals out but leave a border of film around the design so water can't get to the ink.

Next time you might try using Hobby Cal inkjet decal paper. It doesn't require a protective coat over the print.

If you have a Hobby Lobby near you they have Testors Decal Bonder in a spray can.
