YS-11 kit in 1/72 from Bandai

Recommended Posts

Hi there!

In Singapore for a trainee, I had the chance to grab a YS-11 kit in 1/72 from Bandai.

The nose section looks inaccurate and, while not being an expert on the type, I'm not much confident on the rest of the kit (big fat raised rivets, toy-like moving flaps, skinny ldg).

Since I can't find detailed drawings, I thought about using the top and side views of the marking & painting guide found in the Hasegawa kit, question is...

*** are these drawings accurate (-> drawings originating from the 3D files used for tooling the kit, which is said to be accurate)? ***

The 777 in 1/200 from Hasegawa (I bought the "Demonstrator" release at the same time) is very accurate and the drawings from the marking & painting guide look equally convincing, so I was hoping for the same in the YS-11 case.

Thank you for your assistance.

The Hasegawa kit was not designed using CAD, it was done by hand (I was involved with Hasegawa at the time). But it *was* done using a complete set of NAMC factory data, so I think it's about as accurate as it's possible for a 1/144 scale model to be. The drawings used in the instruction sheets match the kit perfectly, and of all the decals I did using them, I never had any trouble getting things on the model to fit exactly the same way they do on the real airplane. That's a good indication that the kit is pretty darn close.

The Bandai kit has some major problems, that's for sure.

Hi J and thanks for your reply,

Hm, your reply suits me perfectly, the kit is accurate, so the drawings are. I will scale up the side and top views from the marking & painting guide and see what goes wrong with the Bandai kit.

I can't remember of a Hasegawa "civilian" kit in 1/200 or 1/144 that didn't look right... amazing how they were able to tool such beauties as the 747s, DC-10s, Tristars and A300s more than 20 years ago (and few years later YS-11s, 777s and MD-11s) without CAD and get them right just from the beginning.

With Revell and Minicraft, it's just hit or miss, either they jerk on the general outline, or the surface details, or both (Revell 747-400, Minicraft 757).

Hm, can't wait to get back home and check this YS-11 kit to see what can be done.

Thanks J!

I to have this kit but the AIMA version with the Piedmont livery, would like to convert into a JASDF ELINT NAMC YS-11 EA/EB, not to worried about some of the inacurracies as it looks like the plane, but probably rub down the rivets and rescribe it and open up the front cabin windows a bit4378653440_72bb0f8566_o.jpg

Hi,

I have the Bandai 1/72 kit (not completly build yet) but it sure captures the look of the real plane, including the nose.

My kit however, purchased many years ago, has the liveries for for a Japanese military plane white top, lt. grey lower, and a semi-military plane coded JA8780 white top, lt-grey lower with broad dk. blue fuselage band and tail.

Nice versieon tough.

Hi Jennings!

Could you pass on the Bandai 1/72 YS-11 issues? I just traded for one I was thinking of an Aerolineas Argentinas or Austral...

Thanks in advance
