1/32 Su-27 Flanker, Ukraine "56" - Final Pics

Recommended Posts

My favorite Ukrainian Flanker scheme. Very Vivid! Do you know what colors you are going to use to replicate it? Looks like you are off and running, Can't wait to see more

Thx... yeah, the scheme is just over the top! Not sure about the colors yet, I have stocked up on a variety of blues and grays and will have to do quite a bit of experimenting.

Cheers,

Marcel

Here's a rather minor update. I'm really not getting much modelling time lately, and the Trumpeter Flanker does take some time.

Those are the Aires wheel wells and the Zacto compressor faces. Please excuse the poor image quality, I bought a new ultra small camera and the pics are just not that great, I'll be going back to the old clunker for modelling pics. Anyway, the compressor color is burnt iron, the pics of the real thing I have indicate this color, which is different to the more usual silvery color associated with other engines' compressor faces.

As has been pointed out many times before, the Aires wheel wells are a work of art, they are just stunning. All that I needed to do is slap some paint on. I used some different shades of blue and gray to introduce some interest.

And here are some cockpit pics. That is Eduard photo-etch on Aires tub. I have hand-brushed many of the Eduard panels with the color I used on the rest of the cockpit to make it blend in. Next step for the cockpit is adding back raised detail.

My next update will likely feature the beautiful Zacto intakes.

nice cockpit!....i remember your outstanding hornet build and so i will follow this closely too!

Thx Infideon, I'm really aiming at going all out with this cockpit, including amalgamating the Aires and Eduard sets.

Thx Qian, Mareku and Mike... yes, that camo is really hard to resist, getting the colors right will be the challange.

If this is going to look like the real one, this should be an excellent model.

Thx Aggressor Supporter, I'll try my best... the fact that the Trumpeter kit is just really inaccurate does through a curveball into the mix. Good thing Zactoman has remedied the most glaring deficiencies, but some hard to fix issues remain.

Cheers,

Marcel

I decided a few weeks ago to re-engage this build, which meant splashing out some $$$ on a new kit as well as getting another pair of Zacto intakes. More on that in the next post. In the mean time, I have done some more work on the cockpit and wheel wells.

Since it's been a while that I posted, a reminder that the cockpit is an amalgamation of Aires pit and Eduard color PE. I had to scratch build the swiches etc. to re-introduce a 3D look after applying the Eduard PE on the Aires instrument panels.

Here is a wheel well update. I didn't have to do much, Aires did all the work already...

Here's an update on my Flanker build--nothing all that special to show but this does prove that I'm still at the hobby

The Zacto intakes are on! That is actually a fair milestone. This time, I also avoided getting warm water on the splitter plates so they didn't warp. Yes, that's what happened with my last attempt. For those of you that are interested, I usually pour some warm water over large resin parts once they are on the model, resin is much stronger than styrene so resin parts tend to deform the parts they are attached to. However, resin has a lower melting point, so by pouring warm water over the assemble, it will typically deform back to the plastic shape.

There's a bunch of rescribing work to do...

This is how things are looking down the intake. This shot also shows why I would always choose the Zacto intake over the kit's intakes, even after Trumpeter released their corrected versions: Trumpeter's new version has a chopped off upper compressor face which, yes, will be visible. If there ever was a model where you can see all the way down the intake to the engine, this is it. Further, Zacto's crisp resin detail won't be found on the Trumpeter rendition.

One last mention is that I drilled out the air flow sensors located throughout the intake, that's barely visible in the pic below.

Here's where I am with the flap. Looks a bit rickety right now, so I do have some work before me.

Thx for looking,

out of curiosity, how much did the kit and all the AM stuff hold you back?

If you ask, you can't afford it

I accumulated all the goodies over a few years so I'm not sure what it would total to, but I'm guessing it's over $400 at this point...

Cheers,

Marcel
