How do I fix this problem?

Recommended Posts

While building my Tamiya Tomcat, I filled in some seams between the intakes and the fuselage. The filler dried, I sanded it, and thought all was well, but as I was working on it today, I happened to check the joints I filled and noticed that the filler had all cracked and separated from the joint. It's really only a hairline crack and it's hard to see, but I have a feeling it'll get worse over time. The gaps I filled are really long and quite narrow. Any suggestions on how to fix this? I was thinking putting a drop of CA glue on the joint and sanding it once it dried, thinking that may seal the filler and prevent it from cracking even more, but I wanted to ask here first before I went and screwed something up. Thanks for the help

Have you got any pics of the area concerned?

I had the exact same problem with my 1/72 Airfix F14 Wing glove boxes. Filler and CA closed the gap but every time I insert the wings, it split. In the end I had to file the crack wider, insert thin plasticard and glue into place. Then filed the excess.

Andy,

It's in this area right here, and along the other intake, just not as bad...

Brady...Thanks for the input, man

Brady

Ive just looked at my Tamiya Tomcat and I think I see were the problem lies.

There seems to be an amount of flexing of the "pancake" area of the tunnel (at least on mine).

My recommendation is to break out the candle and create some thin stretched sprue and melt it into the gap using liquid glue. Give at least 24 hours to set and dry. Then sand and micromesh/wet sand and hopefully this should solve this problem.

Doh now Ive reopened the box I may have to continue building mine
