Tamiya 1:32 Spitfire .... done!

Recommended Posts

I thought the home stretch would take a little longer but things went so well and I had a little more time than I expected, so here she is: my 1:32 Spitfire from Tamiya. It was a great experience with a couple of firsts for me (acrylic varnishes, Promodeller sludge for the wash), a lot of extra detailing (in the cockpit and engine area) and loads and loads of quality time. She's far from perfect but this was the best that I could do and that gives great satisfaction indeed. I hope you enjoy the pics as I did building this. Thanks to all of you who so kindly supported me over the last two and a half months! I will enjoy this one for a couple of evenings and start thinking about a new project. All comments welcome as usual, happy modelling, Jeroen.

Beautiful looking model! I must say that the lines on the plane really get to me...and this is coming from an almost-exclusive jet guy. I'm seriously looking into picking one of these kits up. And you did a great job on the model itself as well. The over-all presentation is excellent.

GORGEOUS!! Love the paint scheme. One little niggle....your Swastikas are on upside down. :coolio:

Thanks Mike! I'm not sure about the swastika's though... this is how mr Tamiya tells us to do it. Maybe it's because they're turned to one side, bt that's how they were on the plane. Left or right, I'm not going to change it ;-). Thanks again, your reply is highly appreciated! Cheers, Jeroen

I like it and have always liked scruffy aeroplanes. This Spit looks very smart for a dirty aeroplane. My only two negetives ( and really only very minor ones ) is that the cockpit door is open, but the door latch is in the locked position ( I said it was minor ). The other point I discovered when doing research for a 1/4 scale Spit, is that I had read that the cockpit door crowbar should be interior green. Red crowbars were a post war addition. I can't remember what the source was, though it may have come from the restorers of Spitfire Mk1a AR213 who helped with my project.

That was a terrible joke to play on Jeroen...and everyone else like me that scrolled back up.

I have to say that I was never a big fan of the Desert scheme, but your work is really inspiring.

Very nice indeed. Are the flaps lowered? I am well into mine, but I am having a small issue with getting the flap on the port side fitting properly and the trailing edge of the upper wing to the wing root isn't a nice fit for me, since it's a Tamiya kit, well engineered as it is, I must have messed up. I just wish Tamiya would leave the flaps molded to the lower wing and not an option to lower...oh well, a little putty and it's fixed. Great paint job Jeroen, and if those are the kit decals..WOW!!

Best Regards

Brad

Hey thanks a lot jerk! Now I'm out $130 dollars. After seeing this masterpiece I am going to have to get one!!! No!!! I don't have the money!!!

All kidding aside, you did a phenomenal job on this airplane. The lines are so subtly highlighted, the paint job and weathering is at a perfect balance and the decals (if you did decal most of it) seem to be painted on.

This is my favorite 1/32 Tamiya spitfire kit to date.

Thanks,

Carlos

Thanks guys... about the decals.. no, they're not decals. Roundels, codes and the basr on the tail were done with Miracle Masks. Google the name and you will see what I'm talking about. Smaller stuff were tamiya decals, which performed ok. Thanks for all your kind words, cheers, Jeroen

Beautiful Spitfire. Special thanks because of Polish Fighting Team scheme. Could you show it with engine covers mounted? I'm still waiting for my kit (and will wait longer to see it finished) and I'm very curious how the covers fit.

About the model and original: the swastikas are OK, according to photos. You can see them here (with discussion about color scheme). But I found a detail missed by you: the covers mounted instead of outer cannons were flat on EN315:

Why there are two tones of red on spinner? And are you sure that this desert Spitfire had stencils and IFF wires?

What a beautiful work of art. You have captured what a Spitfire looks like(with the help of Tamiya). We use to have a Mk IX and other Spitfires and as far as I can see you nailed it. And your Tamiya Merlin is spot, did you add the ignition leads?

Thanks for sharing.

Greg.

The fairing next to the Hispano cannon almost looks like a .50 fairing, but I didn't think they could put a .50 next to a Hispano in a c wing config. Can you account for this different fairing? Why wouldn't desert Spitfires have stencils? EN315 was an early Spitfire, and may have had the IFF wires, as I have seen other EN series Spits with them, including the famous EN398.

Cheers

Jeroen Veen,

Just out of curiousity Are you going to display this MAGNIFICENT Sptifire on a Plinth ..I think it would look awesome

displayed with a small brass plaque with its details....

I'm not sure to be honest... I think this one begs to be put in a dio, and I am starting to have some ideas for that... who knows. Thanks for your very kind remarks! Cheers, Jeroen
