G_Marcat_Italy
The building for the Single Engine Phantom ( LINK ) is going forward but at a certain point I have seen the opportunity of to build up a new What If version of the Phantom. Do You remember the UFO tv Series? Do You remember the SKY ONE? OK, Now imagine that compact design applied to a PHANTOM.... and this is the model that I will do: Summary of modifications: I will cut the rear fuselage at the height of the engines, like in the Sky One. The original empennage of the Phantom will be relocated in forward. The original wings will be relocated toward the rear end of the fuselage. The Phantom's horizontal tails will be applied as canard winglets. The scale is as said 1/48, the base kit is the ESCI F-4J This will be not a high level kit, not resins, not other. The my effort will be pointed into complete the kit. The kit is with recessed panel lines but it's very basic in detail. Bad news: the air intakes are full of sink marks: the original cockpit is is not very realistic, but I will let it as is. Probably will add only a pair of decent seats. This afternoon painted the interiors and glued the wings. And the wings need a lot of brute force to stay welded: This is all for today from SCI FI Channel ( or better, from WHAT IF Channel)
GreyGhost
Ha, COOL, it almost looks like a Viggen ... Nice concept ... Gregg

G_Marcat_Italy
This afternoon done something on the Sci-Fi Phantom: Separated the two assembled wings from the lower fuselage body: Left apart the wings, glued the vertical empennage and the end part of the tail: Cutted the vertical empennage at the base:
HOLMES
I do not know the UFO series but I look forawrd to this Phantom.... it is going to be ONE incredible work of art! :)
G_Marcat_Italy
The last two days done this: The tail previously cutted prepared for the transplant. With a little of effort the wings have been relocated rearward and glued: In the Esci kit the underbelly is separated from the frontal part from a real trench: However, this is the result: Look like a Viggen! G_Marcat_Italy
Today gave to the Viggen-Phantom a hand of primer (Mr.Surfacer 1000 with airbrush). There are a lot of little details that need correction, but thank to the primer now is possible to see the shape of the Viggen-Phantom a bit more clearly.
GreyGhost
That's looking fantastic ! B) Smoove primer coat ... Gregg
G_Marcat_Italy
That's looking fantastic ! Gregg I like this strange Phantom because I have applied a modern look to a design born in the 50's. Now it's time for the worst part of the project: to correct any defect. But hope of to be ready to paint it the more rapid possible.

G_Marcat_Italy
Today given a first coat of paint on the Phantom III (or Phan-Viggen?). Used as paint the Humbrol 28 FS-36622 as in the Phantom Single Engine.
G_Marcat_Italy
Today painted the first series of spots. Used the Gunze H-67 (RLM-65 Light Blue) and a series of masks. Instead of to do as in the my last projects where I did the spots applying the masking tape over large areas wasting paint, this time I have acted differently: little masks of masking tape and the paint applied only on that little area. This is the result of today: PUZZLE !!!!! Tomorrow more patches of another color..... Edited April 19, 2010 by G_Marcat_Italy
GreyGhost
Very cool idea for a camo pattern .... :D I'm looking forward to the other colors ... Gregg

So, in the space of a week this is the second camo turned out different from as expected by me. This is the camo that I was interested to replicate:
G_Marcat_Italy
Today decided of to reprise the work on the Phantom-Viggen: For first, done a POST SHADING on all the surfaces of the Phan-Viggen: Then taken a mix of 99% of rubbing Alcohol and few drops of FS-36622 Gunze and repeatedly painted the center of every paint spot on the upper fuselage: I think of to have spent well two hours. robw_uk
that is one neat camo scheme.... can you do a couple of photos on how you achieved it? not that I would like to replicate it, just curious.......
G_Marcat_Italy
that is one neat camo scheme.... can you do a couple of photos on how you achieved it? not that I would like to replicate it, just curious....... On this model for the first time I have used the adhesive masks. For first thing, I have cutted the shape of the mask on a piece of thick paper. Using a roll of large Tamiya masking tape (the 4 centimeters type) I placed the tape over the piece of paper with the shape of the spot. Using the shadow of the paper mask , cutted the shape of the spot on the paper. At the end, placed the tape on the kit and done the colour spot. Repeated the operation for every spot.
