Kaibutsu
On a NMF aircraft, be it a P-51 or P-47, what colors (wash mix) do you gentlemen use on the TOP and BOTTOM of the a/c to weather it? TIA Andy Edited June 4, 2010 by Kaibutsu
11bee
On a NMF aircraft, be it a P-51 or P-47, what colors (wash mix) do you gentlemen use on the TOP and BOTTOM of the a/c to weather it?TIA Andy Good question on weathering NMF. My biggest gripe with most bare metal models I see out there is that they look like they are made out of polished chrome. To me, they are totally unrealistic. Although I will admit that a few of the actual aircraft "may" have been polished by some poor crew chief, the vast majority were hard-worked combat aircraft and had a very faded, greyish tone to their finish. I can count on one hand the number of models I've seen posted that have a realistic metal finish. That being said, I never thought of using washes to dull down the finish. Always thought it would be easier to add some gray / white paint to your silver mix. I'd be interested in hearing more about the use of washes for this. onescale
Hello, take a look here: http://www.clubhyper.com/forums/plasticpixframe.htm , "1:32 Hasegawa P-47 WIP - getting there". (from Ralph Riese) In my opinion a very, very well "weathered" build. He also did a post a little earlier on that build, search this Hyperscale-forum! model_madness
Havn't done it myself, but read a few times how individuals have masked off certain panels around the a/c and then sprayed each with slightly differing shades of silver/aluminium/chrome via mixing ito create that weathered, used look. Regards, Jens That's exactly the build I was thinking of as a response to the OP's question! Stuff is hard to find on HS, so here's a link to Ralph's thread on LSP: http://forum.largescaleplanes.com/index.php?showtopic=29846 Kev

Looks like the real deal. Thanks very much for posting those links. I never would have thought that Tamiya paints would have dissolved in Testors Dull Coat. I'll definitely give this method a try. I hope some of the "more shine = more realistic" crowd check out those pictures. Regards, John
