Desert Storm GB coming up soon!

Recommended Posts

I'll have to dig through and see what I've got, but I may be in. I did an F-15E for the first DS GB, but did an admitedly poor job on it. I may try to build another and do a better job on this one. I've got several other kits that would qualify, but with a baby on the way, school starting soon, etc, I'm not sure I'll get in on time...the F-15E I'm working on now has taken me about 9 months, and I'm not even close to being done yet.

Once I get the Scud done, I'm going to start on an old hobbycraft 1/72 SU-25. Mine was one of the Iraqi jets that flew to Iran during the opening days of the war. Anyone know of any pics of these particular birds? I think there were 6 or 7 that flew out.

Aaron, we need to go Scud huntin' man! There's gonna be targets on the ground. I'll see if I can fit in an F-15E build this GB.

pics of one flying a combat sortie, or else it didn't happen.

I think I remember a Qatari officer say they put rocket pods or something on their Alpha Jets for maritime patrol during the war while their main fighters (Mirage F-1's) flew combat sorties. I'll have to ask again on my next tea-time social visit, been a while since we had that conversation.

We're talking about Qatar, not the Germans, u fail!

But that will make it even tougher. There were very few reporters there and with a small air force, it is less likely that one of the pilots decided to take pictures. I think the only pictures of Gulf War Qatari aircraft that exist are the ones taken shortly after the war ended in the photo-op V formation with American and Canadian fighters. For some perverse reason, people at war tend not to think about documenting things for future modelers.

I'm in. I will build AC-130H 69-6567 call sign Spirit 03. She was lost in the Battle of Kafji January 31, 1991 with all hands.

"At 0600 hours on the morning of January 31, "Spirit 03" was the last of three AC-130 Spectre gunships on station to provide close air support for the embattled Marines on the ground. Spirit 03 was due to end its patrol when it received a call from the Marines - they needed an enemy missile battery destroyed. Despite the risk of anti-aircrarft artillery fire, and the greater danger of the morning sun casting light on the circling gunship, the crew of "Spirit 03" chose to remain and destroy the position requested.

Soon after eliminating the target designated by the Marines, a lone Iraqi hoisted an SA-7 "Grail" manportable surface-to-air missile to his shoulder. In the dawn of the early morning light, the form of the large AC-130 slowly became visible in the skies over Khafji. The decision to remain behind to support the Marines cost the pilots and crew of Spirit 03 their best defensive weapon - darkness. The Iraqi pointed the weapon at the aircraft, and fired. The missile found its target and at 0635 hours the aircraft sent out a "mayday" distress call and then crashed into the waters of the Persian Gulf. All 14 crewmembers were killed."

Quoted from HERE .

Ex-Gunship Crew Chief and Spectre for life.

Dang, I may have to switch gears, none of the 3 1/48 Hasegawa Tomcats have the correct gun gas vents for either of the markings options on the Fightertown Desert Storm Nose Art decal sheet. I may decide on a CAF Desert Cats Hornet instead, did we have 2 seaters over there?

Back to the Tomcat. i ordered a Steel Beach early gun vent from Sprue Brothers earlier this week. and I have decided on building the "Queen of Spades" with the Hasy 1/48 F-14A kit and Figtertown decals.

For the Alpha Jet guys, found an interesting little tidbit about QEAF AJ's escorting Mirage F-1's to Kuwait and back during the war.

REPUBLICAN GUARDS

After that first QEAF escort mission, the squadron flew a weekly escort mission, but with fewer F-16’s. The normal US/QEAF package was four F.1’s and two F-16’s. Sometimes the F-16’s would work as forward air controllers and mark the target for the F.1’s, and sometimes the F-16’s would only escort. Whatever the case, the F-16 flight lead would always be the package commander. The limited range of the F.1 assured that the mission targets would be no further north than Kuwait City.

As the war progressed, the QEAF Alpha Jets joined the F.1’s, and to everyone's surprise, they made it all the way to Kuwait and back. There were no attempted shoot-downs of the F.1’s, but there were many occasions that the F.1’s were intercepted over the Gulf. It was only through the F-16’s keen radar lookout and frequent announcing of friendly F.1’s over the Gulf that none were lost to friendly fire.

I have seen the same article, the thing is, I could not find any information on Alpha Jet load out while flying to Kuwait. So, til I have accurate information, the Alpha Jet does not join my DS collection

Don't run from it, B, you know you will have to build an Alpha Jet one day....

Even though there's no official GB section yet, it's ok if you start building now, people.

Yay! I just set up my airbrush and stuff. Gonna paint the cockpit of my Monogram AH-64A Apache...and also realized, the kit decals are missing. Darn second hand kits... :)
