Platypus
I like it a lot, being a huge cat fan. :) Yet, on the early F-14s (70s/early 80s), you wouldn't find NACA gun vents. :D
Clave
I'll take a look at the gun vents - it's something I know nothing about... In the meanwhile: Grumman F-14A of VF-33 US Navy 1988. Grumman F-14A of VF-41 US Navy 1978. Grumman F-14A of VF-51 US Navy 1979. Grumman F-14A of VF-84 US Navy 1976.
Clave
Gun vents question - Am I right in thinking that these are the two sets of slots that need removing? Pic:
GreyGhost
Clave, here is the gun vents in question ... >>> Prototype and Early Muzzle <<< >>> Early Production style Vents <<< >>> Early Production Vents, Again <<< >>> Mid Production Style Vents <<< >>> Last Style, "NACA" Vents <<< The thing about the vents are, late in the Tomcat's Service, All three of the main styles of vents could still be found in use as late as the early 2000s ... So, references need to be checked ... I hope that helps some ... Gregg
Eli Raphael
Very nice artwork! Sure hope someone could come out with those early markings in 1/32! (VF-41)

Early type: Single row of slots, short gun fairing, no 'intake' type vents. Early Production 1: Seven 'blocks' of slots, longer gun fairing, no 'intake' type vents. Early Production 2: Two continuous rows of slots, longer gun fairing, no 'intake' type vents. Late Production: No slots, longer gun fairing, 3 x 'intake' type vents. GreyGhost
Right, just switch Production Numbers 1 and 2 around for timewise sake ... BTW, I really like all the latest addition to the thread too .... Gregg

Clave
Very Cool !Bill, I've always been kind of fond of that Diamondbacks scheme ... Gregg I was drawing all those little diamonds on the nose and wing edge, and thinking that it was pretty nice (if annoying) but I wish they had made more of the fin marking though - it seems a little weak compared to other units...? GreyGhost
Well, that was their first Tomcat scheme after transitioning from Phantoms ... I like the tailcode within the diamond more so than the snake and globe logo style that they later switched to and are using now with the Super Hornets ...
