Pilot: Capt. Richard Dale Storr POW

Capt. Storr was flying his second combat sortie of the day looking for targets to hit. Air controllers had given him one target, which turned out to be nothing so he decided to hit a truck part he had already struck earlier in the day. Capt. Storr dropped his bombs, and then made a strafing run on the target. He missed the first time so he and his wingman decided to make a second run from a different angle. As he was pulling off target, his wingman reported “good hits, good secondariesâ€. At that moment, Capt. Storr felt his plane shudder from a missile hit.

The A-10s engines and hydraulic fluid was fine but the plane was slowly rolling to the right and Capt. Storr couldn’t control it. The hit had destroyed the control lines and the plane continued in a slow barrel roll toward the ground. Capt. Storr attempted to contact his wingman but his radio antenna was knocked out; only seconds from impact he ejected less than 5 miles behind enemy lines. Because he had ejected so late, his wingman didn’t see his parachute open and assumed he had crashed with his aircraft.1

Pilot: Col. Bob Efferson

Col. Efferson was leading a four-ship out of Al Jouf on an orientation / Scud-hunting mission. They first bombed bunkers and trucks at “Home Depot†with Mk.82’s. The flight then proceeded to an intersection in Scud Alley where Col Efferson made a low level recce pass. At 11,000 feet, his aircraft was hit by a four round burst of 57mm AA. Shrapnel fragments cooked off one of his AIM-9’s causing it to fire. Two rounds exploded behind the aircraft hitting the tail feathers and right engine. The third exploded under the right wing; the fourth hit in the front nose causing

seventeen major holes and leaving chinks in the titanium armor.

Col. Efferson climbed the aircraft out of the target area and proceeded to KKMC. The aircraft had no flap control or speed breaks. On landing, a main gear tire blew causing the aircraft to roll off the runway into the desert. Large holes where repaired in one week.

Capt. Johnson was a flight leader of a two aircraft section attacking a SAM site. As he called to his wingman that he was rolling into attack with Mk. 82 bombs, his wingman replied “blind†indicating he had lost site of him. Capt. Johnson did not hear the radio call but proceeded with the attack without cover. An infrared missile then impacted with the right wing blowing off a large portion of the wing. The aircraft hard rolled to the right and the right engine ingested large amounts of debris. Capt. The well guarded and multi-level bunker seems to have been a shelter for hundreds of key family members of the Ba'ath Party elite. The bombs were dropped from high altitude (35,000 ft) which enabled them to get a true 90° down trajectory. The LGB kit that it was configured with had a stability augmentation system to keep it straight down. Five were made, four were carried, three were dropped, two hit and exploded, one may remain a dud around 250 feet underground in the bunkers dept. The special penetrator bombs were

made from naval 8" gun barrels cut into 15 foot lengths and stuffed with shape charged explosives and a penetrator rod in the nose behind the LGB guidance seeker (GBU-15). The F-111's dropped the weapons in a steep dive. Originally over 500 casualties were reported, but that was changed to 314.

70-2387_3.jpg

Note: After the war it was reported that an F-117 dropped a Penetrator I-2000 on this target and that it was not one of the GBU-28's from an F-111 reported above.

Pilot: Capt. Douglas L. Bradt KIA

EWO: Capt. Paul. R. Eichenlaub II KIA

The EF-111A, call sign Ratchet-75, was the third aircraft in a flight of three Raven aircraft crossing the border between Saudi Arabia and Iraq in the vicinity of Arar. At 1109 Saudi time, Ratchet-75 should have passed Arar at 21,000 feet, four minutes behind the leader, Ratchet-73, and two minutes behind number two, Ratchet-74. At 1128, Ratchet-75 should have been ten minutes south of his jamming orbit, which was located due west of Baghdad halfway to the Jordanian border.

At 1129, Ratchet-75 was spotted by two F-15E’s flying south at 31,000 ft. The F-15E crews observed Ratchet-75 ejecting eight to ten flares while using its afterburner, roll out of a hard left turn and began a series of “S-turns†as it descended sharply. Twenty seconds later, the F-15Es saw the aircraft eject three more flares, soon followed by a huge fireball as the Ratchet-75 hit the ground.

The lead F-15E, Pontiac-47, began an orbit over the crash site, while his wingman, Pontiac-48, went to the tanker track to refuel. A little over three hours later, a Special Operations helicopter, Sierra-43, arrived on scene and the rescue team examined the wreckage. The confirmed the loss of the EF-111, and it’s two crew. The crew had crashed while evading a perceived threat which did not actually exist.

Just prior to weapons deliver, they received radar warnings but proceeded with their attack as they where seconds away from release. One LGB was dropped and the other was hung up. Shortly after, the Buccaneer crew spotted two SAM’s fired from a site north of the target. They jettisoned external stores and attempted evasive action but a missile exploded beside the aircraft. The canopy was ruptured beside the pilot’s head, the front instrument panel was smashed, and Clark could not contact Hicks. Shortly after, a second missile struck. Despite the extensive damage, including both wings being peppered with holes and no apparent control over the engines, the pilot still had limited control and flew the aircraft or a further two or so minutes before ejecting when he could no longer control the aircraft. Lt. Clark sustained a minor injury to his left leg as a result of the ejection and descent. Lt. Clark was captured and held until cessation of hostilities. Lt. Hicks was found dead.

Col. Sawyer was leading a two-ship with Capt. K. Buchberger to attack the south edge of the Medina Division. They first dropped CBU-58s on soft targets. Col. Sawyer then identified armor in revetments and attacked with an EO Maverick. When pulling off target, he saw three people running towards more vehicles. Col. Sawyer then strafed the targets and as he was pulling off he felt the impact of a missile. The tail control surfaces of the aircraft sustained major damage after being hit by the SA-13. Col. Sawyer flew directly to King Fahd where he safely landed his aircraft.

His aircraft, 80-0186, had over 300 holes in the airframe from the missile hit. It was eventually repaired with fin from Col. Efferson’s plane and returned to flying status.

After this incident, Col Sawyer wrote to Lt. Gen. Horner agreeing with CENTAF that A-10s should only attack targets near the border and outlined how the A-10s would now operate.

Coming off target after a strafing pass, a SAM came at him from two-o’clock; Sweet punched out flares and evaded the missile. Capt. Phyllis then attacked a tank close to where the missile came from. Then Sweet was about to roll-in when a missile hit his aircraft.

The aileron and leading edge of the right wing was blown off. The aircraft began to rolling to the right. Lt Sweet was unable to control the aircraft and resorted to manual reversion without any effect. He then informed Capt. Phyllis he was ejecting and punched out. Lt. Sweet landed 30 yards from a T-72 and was quickly captured.
